Exploring a new garden is guaranteed to bring all sorts of surprises. But it’s good to know ahead of time what type of terrain you’ll encounter.

This year our Open Days event listings offer more information about the terrain you can expect during your garden visits. Hosts have an opportunity to provide notes about hilly pathways, steps, cobblestone walks, or other conditions.

When you see the “Terrain” mountain peak symbol in our printed Directory, expect to find notes from the garden host when you visit the registration page online.

We hope this helps you be better prepared for a beautiful, healthy, happy day of discovery. 🌞

Gardens are a joyous, creative, community-building part of historic preservation, and we’re proud to celebrate Preservation Month with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

This year, the celebration focuses on sites that bring to life one of the most powerful promises made in the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago: that all people are created equal.

Anne Spencer’s historic garden in Virginia is a vibrant example. It was the private sanctuary of one of the most important poets of the Harlem Renaissance, and an essential meeting ground for civil rights leaders of the era. Today the garden is open to the public daily, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Anne Spencer House & Garden is a living monument to the American promise, and principle, of equality. We’re proud to partner with the National Trust at sites like the Spencer garden, and we join in the celebration this May.

“Their story matters. This place matters. This landscape matters," says , executive director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and strategic advisor to the CEO of the National Trust. "And we believe that this historic place must stand in perpetuity to tell this important American story."
