Today is World Food Day. Founded in 1979 by The United Nations to memorialize the founding of The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (1945). This day is celebrated on October 16th each year and highlights the reality that poverty, world hunger, and local food insecurity in our communities remain something that we need to talk about. We can get involved!

Join with us to make a difference both globally and locally! Ways you can help:

*Connect those in our community with resources to support them.
*Donate to or volunteer with The North Texas Food Bank
*Donate to or volunteer with Good Samaritans of Garland
*Donate to or volunteer with Sharing Life Community Outreach
*Donate to the efforts of The World Food Programme
-The World Food Program is the worldโ€™s largest humanitarian organization and is funded by voluntary contributions from governments, organizations and private individuals.
- The World Food Program continues to address the extreme food insecurity of the people of Gaza where roughly 67% of the population is facing crisis levels or higher of food insecurity.

October 15, 2026 is World Values Day. This day reminds us to be mindful of our own closely held values, but it also asks us to listen to others. As parents and caregivers, our values guide our behavior and they send messages to the kids in our lives. Today is a great opportunity to make sure that your actions line up with your values and that you invite children into a conversation about the "why" behind the way things are.

Emotional regulation, critical thinking and executive functioning aren't fully developed until the mid-twenties, therefore children and adolescence rely on what they have been taught to help them make decisions and dictate how they interact with the world. Their brains are geared towards learning and following the examples set before them. Have a conversation today about what your family's values are and how you can help children navigate the world within that framework!

Today is National Stop Bullying Day. Bullying has become an increasingly important conversation with the addition of cyberbullying into the ways in which people, and primarily children can experience bullying. Parents, it is important that we have serious conversations with our children about what bullying looks like, the temptation to bully, and what can happen as a result of bullying. We all have a role to play in this fight.

October 12 is Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated in lieu of or in conjunction with Columbus Day. This is a day that seeks to elevate industry, perseverance, and the continued presence of Native Peoples over colonization. We recognize that we live on sacred land once inhabited by various Indigenous Nations. We recognize that the road from then to now is marred with loss, oppression, and destruction. We seek to celebrate the enduring culture and heritage of Indigenous Peoples.

DAPE is an organization focused on supporting families. We recognize that Native Children and Families still need support. Below is an organization that supports Native Youth.

Banned Book Week is October 4-10, and ends with Let Freedom Read Day on October 10, 2026. This is a day to recognize the importance of the written word and the dangers that censorship can bring. You might be surprised at some of the books that end up on the banned book list. Some are childhood classics that became a formative part of our lives.

What is a book you have read on the banned book list?

Random Fact: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? By Bill Martin, Jr. was banned briefly in 2010 due to a mixup. Bill Martin, Jr. was confused with Bill Martin a Marxist, and therefore, beloved Brown Bear was banned. This decision was reversed.

Today is Curious Events Day. Brains are inherently curious. It is through insatiable curiosity in childhood that children grow healthy brains. But it never has to end, and it shouldn't. Adults have the capacity for curiosity and in getting curious, we can expand our world and find greater peace. The Irish author, educator and retailer of fairytales, James Stephens once said, "Curiosity will conquer fear even more than bravery will."

Get curious today! Join your child in asking questions and absorbing your environment.

What curious events will you attend this weekend?
