When a disabled veteran and single mother reached out to Habitat, her roof was leaking in several places. With a new child on the way and two others to care for, the repairs were out of reach—and the damage was continuing to grow.

Through Garland Habitat’s Critical Repairs Program, supported by , we replaced the failing roof to make the home safe, dry, and stable once again. Inside, we repaired drywall damaged by the leaks, addressed plumbing and electrical issues, and replaced a defective sliding door—thanks to additional support from the Texas Veterans Commission and VHRM.

With a secure roof overhead, this family can now continue to thrive and focus on building a brighter future grounded in strength and stability.

This century-old home had begun to fail its owner — a disabled veteran whose flooring was literally falling in beneath him. The bathroom had become unsafe and inaccessible, with a sinking tub and rotted subflooring, while the kitchen’s uneven floors and failing systems made everyday life a challenge.

Through our Critical Repairs Program and the support of , we were able to practically rebuild these essential spaces from the ground up. The bathroom now features a fully accessible walk-in shower and durable new flooring thanks in part to the Amy Young Barrier Removal and VHRM Grants. In the kitchen where previously the appliances were faulty the cabinets were broken and the flooring unsafe, now stands a new safe, accessible, and usable kitchen.

These repairs not only made the home functional again—they gave the homeowner the ability to move safely, live independently, and feel secure in a home that finally meets his needs.

She served our country with strength and dedication — and now, as a female veteran living with a 100% service-connected disability, she continues to show resilience while raising her two children here in Texas.
But when her HVAC system stopped working, the inside of her home reached over 80 degrees during the day. No family — especially one that has sacrificed so much — should have to endure dangerous heat like that.

Thanks to and Habitat’s Repair Corps program, her family now has a safe, reliable HVAC system that restores comfort and peace of mind.

For too long, women veterans have been called the “forgotten veterans.” It wasn’t until 1980 that the census even counted them, uncovering more than 1.2 million women who had served — most unaware of their benefits. Today, there are 1.9 million female veterans nationwide, with Texas home to one of the largest populations.

We are proud to stand with women veterans like her, ensuring their service and sacrifices are honored with safe, healthy homes.

🏡 Meet a resilient veteran couple in their 80s and 90s, facing daily challenges in their home. Untouched for decades, it needed urgent repairs: damaged drywall, non-functional windows, hazardous wiring, and more. Habitat Greater Garland’s Critical Home Repair Team stepped in to transform their space into a haven of safety and comfort. We replaced doors, sealed walls, painted ceilings, and restored their kitchen. Now, their home isn’t just livable; it’s where they find dignity and peace. 🏠✨ Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland (HFHGG) is on Facebook! ✨🏠

Hello, Greater Garland community! We are so excited to be able to connect with you all and share our story. Our mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

Since our founding in 1994, HFHGG has dedicated itself to serving veterans, individuals with disabilities, seniors, and low-income families across Garland, Sachse, and Rowlett. Over the years, we've built 91 affordable homes and completed more than 125 critical home repair projects. These achievements have been made possible thanks to the steadfast support of volunteers, partners, employees, board members, and our entire community.

We're excited to share our ongoing initiatives, including our upcoming Veterans Pocket Community in Garland, which includes 15 homes and a community center. These efforts are part of our commitment to ensuring stable housing for those who have served our country.
