The Garland Historical Society is dedicated to the collection, preservation and the presentation of history and heritage of the unique place that Garland holds in Maine’s history.
We are located in one of the few remaining G.A.R. Halls. The original building was built onto and was a small drugstore operated by Liston P, Evans.
Lewellyn Oaks purchased the building, built on the side , back and an upper story. He then opened a store. The upper floor was used as a hall. The Good Templar’s met there. They were known as the Independent Order of Good Templar’s. There was considerable friction about this temperance order and so people inferred sarcastically that the initials I.O.G.T. stood for “I often get tight.”
Mark Avery bought the building and then sold it to the G.A.R. - The Grand Army of the Republic. When the G.A.R. disbanded the property was controlled by the Women’s Relief Corps. Before they ceased functioning the G.A.R. Hall was deeded to The Ladies Aid used the G.A.R. Hall during this time. Many remember the “chicken pie suppers” they served.
