More About the Oktoberfest Train

This round-trip ride from Rockaway Beach travels north to Wheeler as the sun sets 🌅, allowing passengers to enjoy the return trip along the coast in the evening light. As the train rolls along, indulge in local b**r or w**e 🍺🍷 while taking in the views of Nehalem Bay and the Pacific Ocean. 🍽️ You can also enjoy a food offering from Garibaldi’s own Twins Ranch Cafe.

🚂 Tomorrow is your last chance to ride the Wheeler Limited all the way from Garibaldi to Wheeler for the season!

Take in the sights and sounds of our 100-year-old McCloud River Railroad #25 steam locomotive as the train chugs past coastal views, through forests, and along estuaries in the late afternoon light, with the return trip occurring right at golden hour! 🌅

All passengers will be given a layover in stunning Wheeler along the Nehalem Bay, where they will be able to disembark for 1 hour. During the layover in Wheeler, our partner businesses will be staying open late so passengers can enjoy all that Wheeler has to offer, including local cuisine and artisan shops! 🛍️🍽️

This 1-hour layover is included in the total round-trip time of both options.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience an evening full of history, amazing views, and experiences to remember. This trip includes informative narration about the railroad, local history, and the natural world we’re traveling through. This is a family-oriented experience, and all ages are welcome aboard this excursion!

🕐 And if you're looking for a slightly shorter trip, you can skip the section out of Garibaldi and pick up the train at Rockaway Beach for a shorter 2.5-hour round trip instead of the longer 4-hour round trip.

SERVICE NOTICE: TRAINS CANCELLED FOR WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 2! RESUMING THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 3.

In addition to the rain in the forecast, there are predictions of wind gusts up to 40 MPH along the Tillamook Coast during the time trains are supposed to be running. Typically storms like this happen after the trees have shed their leaves in the Fall, but seeing a storm like this in late summer is quite rare. With the deciduous trees still full of leaves, wind driven rain conditions heighten the likelihood of tree fall along the route. Out of an abundance of caution and with the safety of our guests in mind, we are halting train service for Wednesday September 2nd.

We will be resuming service Thursday September 3rd! We look forward to welcoming our guests aboard once the storm passes!

Ride a Speeder this weekend on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad!

In addition to our regular Coastal Excursion Train and Moonlight Excursion rides this weekend 🌙🚂, the West Coast Railroaders Group will be operating Speeder Excursions for the public on Saturday & Sunday from 10 AM–4 PM out of Garibaldi! 🎟️

Now you may be asking yourself… 🤔
“Self, what is a Speeder?” 😄

Well, for those who have never seen one of these before, a railroad speeder is a small gasoline-powered car originally designed to transport railroad maintenance crews, tools, and equipment along the tracks. 🛠️🛤️ Speeders were also often used by section crews to inspect track, perform maintenance, and respond to problems along the railroad. 🔧👷 Their simple design, open cab, and ability to be easily maneuvered on and off the track made them practical workhorses for generations of railroaders.

Today, speeders have been mostly replaced by “hi-rail” trucks (pickup trucks with fold-down railroad wheels), but many railroad enthusiasts and museums operate restored speeders to preserve this ubiquitous and lesser-known facet of railroad history—a part of railroad maintenance that was the lifeblood of section crews for nearly a century.

🛤️ This weekend, the public gets the opportunity to ride the rails like a railroader!

Riding a speeder is a completely different experience from riding the train! 🚂➡️ You’re down close to the rail and ties. It’s noisy, bumpy, and a whole lot of fun—but the views are second to none! 🌲🌊🏔️

If you want to try out this unique way of riding the rails, tickets can be purchased at our Garibaldi boarding area. 🎟️

This is Jack Honts. He is one of our valued crew members, and he needs our help!

While his family calls him Tatum, his railroad family at OCSR calls him Jack, partially because he is the Jack of all trades and partially because he doesn't like going by Tatum at work! Jack does a little of everything at OCSR; track work, shop hand, signal maintenance, train conducting, locomotive firing, you name it. Jack started with us as a Ticket Agent years ago, and he has grown into many roles at the railroad, working his way up through the ranks in part due to his calm demeanor and unwavering work ethic. Most recently Jack was trained as a Locomotive Engineer and officially promoted only 3 weeks ago.

Unfortunately, Jack wont be behind the throttle for a while. Earlier this week, Jack got in a horrific car accident that resulted in serious injuries. To say Jack is lucky to be alive is an understatement, and to say that this accident has left our whole staff shaken up is an even bigger understatement. The mood is somewhat somber right now, but we are keeping our heads high and running trains for hundreds of guests each day. That's the way Jack would want it.

While equipment and infrastructure are an important part of any railroad, none of it would be useful without talented people. Put simply, good people are the most important part of a successful railroad, they are what make the whole operation tick. Jack is an integral part of OCSR, and we want to help him have a speedy recovery. So, we are asking for your help. While we often ask for donations for equipment restoration and capital projects, today we are asking you to help our friend and colleague, Jack. His extended family has set up a Go Fund Me to help Jack and his immediate family as they navigate this tragedy. Any donation, big or small, helps them out.

🚂🌙 We're gearing up for our next 21+ Moonlight Train this Saturday night! 🎶🍷

For those that don't know, we've added live music to the festivities aboard the Moonlight Train this year, and this Saturday we're featuring the jazz combo Spindriff! 🎷🎵 They are a talented group of Tillamook County locals whose tunes perfectly fit the era of our historic train.

🎥 Here they are during a practice and sound check session inside the "Wilson River" coach car, built by the Pullman Car Company for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1924. 🚃✨

🎟️ Tickets are still available for the Moonlight Train!

Enjoy a 3-hour steam-powered journey 🚂💨 departing Garibaldi at 7:30 PM, traveling along the breathtaking Tillamook and Nehalem Bays. 🌊🌲 You'll experience stunning views of the forests, sparkling water, and the Coast Range mountains 🏔️ on the way north, with the evening light shimmering across the bays on the return trip.

🍺🍷 As a 21+ event, passengers are invited to enjoy local b**r or w**e as the train rolls along this historic route. Featured b**rs are brewed by Pelican Brewing and Freight B**r, with local w**es crafted by Nehalem Bay Winery. 🍻 We also have delicious food offerings from Garibaldi's own Twins Ranch Café 🥪 available for pre-order when booking or for purchase aboard the train.

Next weekend is Garibaldi Days! 🚂🎆 During Friday through Sunday, this annual summer festival will feature a lively parade down Highway 101 🎺, live music 🎶, a classic car show 🚗, vendor booths 🛍️, and spectacular fireworks 🎇 lighting up Tillamook Bay at dusk. It is going to be a very busy few days on the railroad, with lots of events and trains operating! 🚂

🎊 The Garibaldi Days Parade starts at 11 AM on Saturday the 25th and is one of the main events of the festival—but parking is always a nightmare! 🚗🚫 Instead of fighting the traffic and searching for precious parking, board the OCSR Parade Shuttle Train 🚂 for a worry-free trip to Garibaldi Days!

🕘 This special trip departs from Rockaway Beach at 9:00 AM, arriving in Garibaldi around 9:30 AM—about an hour and a half before the parade begins! ⏰ Passengers can get off the train, grab great seats along the parade route 🪑🎉, and enjoy the festivities.

🎈 Once the parade is over, you can hop right back on the 12 PM return train, or stay longer and catch the 2 PM or 4 PM return to enjoy the vendors 🛍️, local businesses 🏪, and everything Garibaldi Days has to offer! ☀️

It's one of the most exciting days of the year here at the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad! Today large crowds of visitors will ride our rails to get to the 4th of July Parade and the famous Fireworks Show in Rockaway Beach. They will use the train to explore the coast down to Garibaldi, enjoying visits to the many shops and eateries that make the Tillamook Coast so unique! Every year on Independence Day, the OCSR acts a critical piece of our county's transportation infrastructure, and it does so in style with 100 year old passenger cars and an equally old steam locomotive!

Railroad history is intrinsically tied to the development of our country, and it's part of the reason that we work so hard around here to preserve it. Railroads connected people and goods, moving them from town to town, state to state and coast to coast. They are largely responsible for the development of the west and its many cities that we know today, including the ones that we operate through. As we celebrate 250 years of the United States of America today, countless families will get to witness the dramatic scenery of the Pacific coastline and the deep connection that railroad history has to the growth and uniting of our country. It is a truly "American" experience that creates memories that will last a lifetime!
