Thanks to the Tillamook Headlight Herald for covering our Tillamook transition program's impact on the region, especially our partnerships with Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) and Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuges. Link in the comments.

TEP's Nursery Crew Lead Steve Sprague views the nursery as the starting point for both the plants and youth: “we give them the best start we can” so plants and youth alike might “radiate out from this place and do good things everywhere.”

Grateful to our partners and to the Headlight Herald for covering!

The baby salmon hiding under logs in your backyard river will make an epic journey to the ocean. Along the way, they will brave hungry herons and bigger fish and swim through the estuary and bay.

3 to 5 years in the ocean will be spent eating as much as they can, until they reverse their journey and return to their natal river to spawn.

Healthy oceans mean healthy salmon, and healthy salmon support healthy communities - happy world ocean day!

What does it actually feel like to learn about a salmon's journey?

At the Children's Clean Water Festival, kids don't just hear about it, they live it!

Callie Sheker Grothe, Tillamook School District 9's Natural Resources Coordinator, and one of the driving forces behind TEP's incredible relationship with local schools, describes the experience beautifully:
"They're actively doing what a salmon is doing and understanding that a salmon's journey isn't easy. So they're getting a very full ecosystem-wide perspective of the life cycle and habitats that are unique to Tillamook County."

“And the goal goes even deeper than one great field trip. By connecting students to these places now, we're planting seeds for the next generation of scientists, advocates, and stewards who will speak for the wildlife and waterways of Tillamook County for decades to come.”

25 years of immersive outdoor learning. 💧

Imagine going on a field trip as a kid - spending the day outside, learning about clean water and the salmon that call Tillamook County home - and then, 25 years later, dropping off your own child at that same experience.

That's exactly what's happening at the Children's Clean Water Festival.

Founder of the CCWF, Claudine Rehn, has been saying it for years- and here, Rachel Freeman, salmon biologist, Education Manager at Oregon Shores, and longtime TEP friend, says it again:
"It is now an experience that people who were at the first Children's Clean Water Festivals as students are now returning to as parents, chaperoning their own kids going through this field trip experience."

25 years of Tillamook kids connecting to their waterways. 25 years of community showing up. 25 years of something truly special. 💧

Four more TEP staff are Wilderness First Aid certified! Whether it be splashing though the swampy estuary or hiking through the brush near headwaters, Claire, Diana, Lisa, and Bria are ready to handle a medical emergency. Thank you for sponsoring these trainings for our county!

Thank you for leading such an interactive and valuable course!

Imagine Lisa and Claire are out in the Southern Flow Cooridor salt marsh and Lisa falls and hurts her ankle. Claire is now prepared to make sure the area is safe, no other threats are hurting Lisa, and to help Lisa wrap and support her ankle and get to more help! Vital skills when much of our work is out in the forest and estuary.

A Wilderness First Aid certification means that we can help a person in the backcountry who is experiencing an emergency. By practicing real scenarios, staff prepared for head injuries, hypothermia, broken bones, sprains, allergies, and other medical emergencies.

After 20+ years with the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership, Deputy Director Claudine Rehn still finds joy in one simple truth: “when you ask people to show up for their community, they do”.

"What truly surprises me is how many people say yes when you ask them."

That community spirit is the heartbeat of the Children's Clean Water Festival, now celebrating 25 years of connecting young people to the waterways of Tillamook County. Claudine says it best - “the more we get kids out into these places, the more they'll grow up to value, appreciate, and care for them”.

25 years. Countless kids. One incredible community. 💧
