How it all started
Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) had its start like many other charities, in a garage. It was Christmas time, a time of joy and happiness, a time of giving and love, but also a time of bitter, cold weather and snow storms. A project, that was started with the build of one bed for a single family developed into something a whole lot more. With wood left over from the first bunk, another idea was created. “Who else could benefit from this bunk”?
A simple post on Facebook sparked an unexpected response. What was thought would be a litter of requests from needy families, turned into a litany of local people eager to help and volunteer. The generosity of these volunteers was so surprising that it was no longer a search for one who needed a bed, but a question of how many beds we could provide. From there, the idea grew into reality.
Our mission is simple: No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town. The mission is accomplished through bringing the community together to build handmade bunk beds and deliver them with mattress/bedding to children who don’t have beds of their own. SHP was founded in 2012; however, we along with millions of people across country hadn’t heard of the organization until February 2018 when Mike Rowe from the TV show ‘Dirty Jobs’ featured SHP on a new show of his called ‘Returning the favor.’ You can watch the 20 minute episode here.
Since the show has aired there have been over 1,000 requests to start new chapters across the United States. Most of the new chapters are in blue. We knew our family had to be involved and we hope that you will join us to make sure, "No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town."
