Years ago, Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts) invited girls in all programs. Later, co-ed Troops were permitted, and today, Troop 6 is a family Troop, where parents and youth can enjoy the world of hiking, biking, kayaking, and many other outdoor adventures TOGETHER. The whole family. Scouting is the way to learn the basics of safety, first aid, knots, and other skills to really enjoy the outdoors. First it was Christopher Scott from the US Navy at President Trump’s first inauguration. Today, Andrew Guay, another Gardner Troop 6 Eagle Scout served at President Trump’s second inauguration. We are very proud of both of these men. While not an adventure for kids, both of these men were kids in Gardner and developed the skills and discipline to persue their dreams and make a difference in many lives. We salute you both.

Kids who sign up this fall will receive a sleeping bag and a ground pad. If they would like a bike, tent, or fishing pole, they need only ask. These items are made available by generous donors to make adventures more afordable for families.

We are pleased to announce that Lynn Denette has been designated as the Scoutmaster for the co-ed Scouting Troop 6 in Gardner. Boy Scouts of America is now Scouting America. Several Troops have been selected to be co-ed pilot Troops. Troop 6 for boys has been sponsored for decades by American Legion Post 129. The Legion was the first one to sponsor both an all-girl Troop and an all-boy Troop. Gardner Legion has a long history of providing opportunities for all youth, dating back to the late 1970’s. This summer, their co-ed Venturing Crew travelled to the Sierra Nevada’s in New Mexico for extensive hiking, including mountains above 11,000 feet. Today, Troop 6 will be available to boys and girls 11-18, while Venturing continues to provide adventures for 14-20 year olds. If you know an adventuresome kid, reach out to co-ed Troop 6 in Gardner, forging the frontiers of Scouting in the modern age.
