Team Anissa

Team Anissa Non-profit raising awareness on Childhood cancer while bringing joy and smiles to others. In memory of Anissa Michelle Guerrero (5/12/00-9/24/15) (SRLA).

Anissa Michelle Guerrero was born on May 12, 2000 to parents Ana Ramirez and Cesar Guerrero. She is the youngest of their two daughters. Throughout her life, Anissa had a variety of health issues. She was asthmatic and by kindergarten she needed hearing aids. None of this stopped her. Anissa had many friends, was an excellent student, and was an athlete. She played soccer for 8 years. Before start

ing her last season, she told her dad that she would play only if he coached the team. So he did and that year they won the championship. Once Anissa entered middle school, she joined Students Run L.A. Anissa trained for 6 months to run the L.A. Marathon and completed the 2014 Marathon at 13 years old. Anissa continued to run and got first place in her division at a race in Mammoth. Shortly after that race, she felt a pain in her leg which she thought was just a strained muscle. After a visit to the doctor, we knew it was going to be difficult to identify what the problem was. After countless scans and doctor visits, on November 18, 2014, she was diagnosed with stage 4 osteosarcoma located on the left side of her pelvic bone. This news did not alter her spirits. Anissa remained full of life and full of smiles. Throughout her process, she dealt with surgeries, treatment, and hospitalization. This gave Anissa the opportunity to witness children and families who are less fortunate. The legacy she wants to leave behind is of her helping others and to bring awareness to childhood cancer. She knew and understood that everyone is vulnerable to this disease. Help us continue her legacy. We have created this organization to help the children and their families that we have met throughout this journey, as well as to raise awareness on childhood cancer.

Merry Christmas Eve! ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป

We got a special donation from our dear friend and Team Anissa supporter, Cami! She hosted a special get together and asked for toys to be donated to give to the kids at the hospital for Christmas.

Weโ€™re so fortunate to have such great friends and supporters who love supporting our mission of bringing smiles to children affected by cancer. We canโ€™t wait to spread the Christmas spirit ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป๐ŸŽ„

Today marks 7 years of Anissaโ€™s passing. 7 years of missing her so much.

Since Iโ€™m at Disneyland today, our favorite place growing up, Iโ€™m sharing some of our memories at the parks.

A question I always wondered was what were the causes of cancer in children?

Generally speaking, life-style factors (such as smoking, unhealthy diet, and drinking alcohol) and environmental factors (radiation exposure) are some of the causes of cancer.
But life style factors do take years to have that affect on a personโ€™s body, which is why most adults experience cancer due to lifestyle factors.

So what causes cancer in children?

While reading an article from the American Cancer Society, they state that more research needs to be done in order to find a conclusive answer, but its the changes in genes that cause cancer; whether its inherited (but most childhood cancers are not inherited) or due to gene mutations that happen early on in life. But again, more research is needed to explore the possible links. This is one of the many reasons why we advocate for more funding when it comes to childhood cancer. 4% of funding is not enough when our kids are worth ! ๐ŸŽ—

The month of September is a tough one for our family. We cherish the memories we have of Anissa, but we shout from the top of the mountains in support of more funding for childhood cancer research.
