Art isn’t the only form of creation. Writing, music, dance, baking, weaving, pottery, gardening, building, welding… what else would you add to the list? As year 2 of Created Ministry came to a close, I began to see so many different unique gifts come out of people, so we started doing diverse sessions and workshops to include more creative mediums. It was in this discovery that I began to notice some important patterns emerge. 2018 was a break through year in many ways- so if you don’t already- follow along to find out how God took this small local art ministry and used it to reach the world.

In 2017, we had the chance to work with a lot of kiddos and families. Honestly, it became a teaching time for grown ups. Kids are naturally more comfortable creating and making messes, and I many times had to remind adults in mixed sessions to learn from their children or grandchildren in how to play and let the Lord invite joy through creating. This large family session, while a stretch to facilitate on such a large scale, was absolutely beautiful to witness and be part of. Each family unit created a family tree made up of each person in their family. Whenever I got asked to do things I’d never done before, my answer was always- “absolutely! Sounds fun!” And then the process of listening and trusting the Holy Spirit for the “how” came later. If you were at this session years ago- comment! I’d love to hear from you!

I think the most creative people I know are children. In 2017, the Lord entwined our stories with a dear family escaping the war for trauma of their home country. From this friendship it led us into connecting with a community made up largely of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers in our city. As we learned stories, names, personalities- one thing remained the same: kids are kids. That first year we spent a lot of time playing, using chalk, crafting, playing soccer. While we shared (some) I can say that in every single home we were welcomed into we were offered more than we came with. The hospitality was unmatched. Once my husband and I added it up and we had been invited to dine with more immigrant families on small floors and plastic tables in that several year span than any American homes. My kids played and drew with theirs and there was never fear in my heart. I share this part of the Created story in gratitude- thankful that God has allowed our intertwined journeys with so many from around the world, most of whom like you and me- just long to have to joy filled peace and heart of a child that’s given the freedom and space to create something beautiful and be loved on by a God that sees them.

Ahh the power of a good circle. I came that day exhausted from parenting, drained from leading and with absolutely nothing to give the people that signed up for this session. I debated canceling it but the Lord prompted otherwise. So showed up and put blank boards in front of each creator, and waited. We prayed together and I heard absolute silence from the Lord. Because I was dependent on Him to give me something to lead this group, this wasn’t an ideal moment for silence as they all waited patiently staring at me for instruction. So- I told them to do what I do when I’m uncertain. I asked them to pick up their pencils and being writing or scribbling on their canvases. I expected this to last 2-4 minutes, but the writing went on for almost 20 minutes straight. Apparently what they needed was space. Finally after the last pencil stopped frantically writing, I asked them to choose three colors that represented how they were feeling that day. And then they painted, you guessed it… circles. Slowly, methodically. He reminded us that our seasons are cyclical and come back around again. That God in constant in all our emotions, doubts and feelings. We ended up collaging 3D flowers on top to complete our pieces but I learned a valuable lesson that day in leading- leave space for nothingness. It’s often what our souls need the most.

If you’ve been following along on this storytelling journey of Created Ministry starting in 2014- thank you! Please go back and read the beginning. If you’re just joining us, March begins the look back at year three: 2017. Give a follow to see how it all unfolds!

Quickly, churches, groups and retreat gatherings all realized art ministry was a powerful way to help engage their body with the healing heart of God at an individual level that was different than anything that had been down before. I will never forget this gathering of almost 300 women and the tears I watched pour down their faces as they simply drew circles on their papers. I was baffled- amazed and deeply grateful that this “thing” (creating) really was a powerful breakthrough that couldn’t be explained. As I led these women through a very simple prayer circle exercise that consists of using color, circles and patience- they slowed down long enough in silence to let the Lord speak to them. If by chance any woman who was there that day sees this- I’d love to hear what you remember! And if you’d like to have an art ministry session at your retreat or gathering, please reach out!

2016 was a year or many firsts for Created as we got started doing art ministry session after session- trying out new things and new ways to help people engage with the Lord and each other through the creative process. One of my favorite sessions that began this year is still a favorite to this day: couples session. In it, two people create on one canvas- expressing their hearts, the good, the hard and the in between to one another. Over the years it’s been a place of healing and renewal, hope and restored life, promises fulfilled and declarations of Gods most powerful love for each one of us over it all. In one of these pictures of the very first session is a dear friend that’s no longer with us but that will forever be part of this story. You are remembered and loved.

If you’d like to bring a group to the Created Studio for a couples session- reach out to me! And if these posts have sparked your interests in leading art ministry sessions- please check out our profile and training program, I’d love to have you!

Rio 2016. In 2012, the Lord gave an extremely clear mission to our family- we would go to the nations during the 2016 Olympics in Rio DeJaniero. This was years before either Created or Esther came into the picture and we said yes. As the time grew closer, our family grew larger and we still felt no closer to understanding our mission there then four years prior. So we waited and prayed and the Lord again had us take a huge leap of faith. We booked flights a month out from the Olympics still having no connections, team, place to stay or vision for what to do. When we arrived- the Lord laid it out for us one day (sometimes hour) at a time. Several days I got to paint faces on the beach as the rest of our family and few other believers we met talked to people about Jesus. One day I sat in a public square with a view of the “Christo Redentor” statue. As I drew sketches for people, others told anyone who would listen that Christ is not made of stone but alive and present. While we did see some people meet Jesus for the first time in that trip, I think more than anything it taught all of us how to fully faith walk in the face of fear and uncertainty. Jesus showed me the power of simple art as a way to break down language barriers. And it laid the foundation for training to come in the years that followed. We don’t always get to see the result of the “yes”, but Gods word never returns void and He will always accomplish why He sent it.

How do I fit all these stories into one little caption! Alright. Here’s the next journaling image I wanted to share with you. The image was simple and came along with a word: gatherer. It’s the name I would hear as I prayed. It’s the word the Holy Sprit kept showing me about who I am. Again, it comes from the passage in Isaiah 55 where it says, “surely you will summon nations you know not and nations that do not know you will be gathered to you because of the Lord your God.” This word became truer than we understood at the time, but for 2016, it laid the groundwork of a crazy calling to go to the nations back in 2012. Keep following along for all the beautifully wild and messy interwoven stories of Created and art ministry. If you just started joining, scroll back to January to learn how this all began!

This is a wild one. One of the images I “captured” on feb 2,2016 was me taking a Polaroid of a raging fire that was coming. I had no interpretation, no understanding- just something I felt strongly that needed to be captured in that moment. *I’ll talk about this in a second* Fast forward almost a year, filled with such intense wrestling and struggle, confusion, hurt, faith and feeling completely out of control. And did I mention miracles? In 2017, after a lot of backstory and a lot of prayer- my husband and I felt deeply prompted to begin what we called a discipleship training school as the Lord kept moving in a small but faithful group of young adults in our community. There are many things I could insert here- mostly how much growing and unlearning we had to do- but back at the end of December he and I sat on our bedroom floor in prayer- asking the Lord what this was. A lot would be revealed later, but in that moment the image that kept coming up was a wildfire. So that’s what we named the training school. That transformed alongside others joining us into what’s now an entirely different vision completely, but still called Wildfire Network that’s been going since 2017. It wasn’t until two full years later that I went back into my journal and saw this image of fire sitting there without words or understanding. I cannot begin to explain how much the Lord built my faith that day.

You might never know why God puts a word on your heart. You might never know why the Holy Spirit told you to write that thing or share that with that person at the table. But in Isaiah 55 (which is our families life passage) God says His Word does NOT return void and it WILL accomplish the purposes for which He sent it. There are many things I still hold in my heart, and might never know or understand what they mean- but I will keep holding them until the Lord tells me to let them go. Have faith sweet friends. Just because you don’t know what’s ahead doesn’t mean God isn’t preparing you for it now.

2016. What a year! I’m excited to share with you guys this month as it’s filled with a lot of faith walking and amazing God stories that I never saw coming when I first said “yes” to art ministry. But let’s begin here with the journals. I’m a journaler (is that a noun?) and have been my whole life, but surprisingly never actually did art journaling per-say. But in January of 2016, I just kept seeing pictures, like little snapshots that came in the form of micro moving images I wanted to capture. So for my first session of the year I invited others into this process for a session on creative with the Lord. We worked through a few reflections together and then practiced listening to Jesus in the quiet. I don’t know what each of these journals came to hold- but I look forward to sharing some things that happened in mine. Did you ever join us for a journaling session? I’d love to hear about it in the comments! ❤️
