Episcopal Ministries of Long Island Training & resourcing Episcopal parish ministries that bring our faith from "pew to public square"

Episcopal Ministries of Long Island envisions a world in which powerful ministries work together to bring forth the Kingdom of God in our midst. By resourcing, nurturing, and amplifying ministries across the diocese, Episcopal Ministries seeks to bring forth loving, liberating, and life-giving relationships with God, each other, and with the earth.

On Thursday, clergy and ministry leaders from across the Peconic Deanery gathered at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Westhampton Beach for Evensong and a potluck dinner. We’re deeply grateful to St. Mark’s for their hospitality and to everyone who prayed with us, shared a meal with us, and took time to discern together how God is calling us to serve.

Our final Evensong of the series is Thursday, November 19 at 6 p.m. at St. Mark’s in Islip, and all are welcome!

We're always planning new ways to bring ministry leaders together.

On Tuesday, members of our Garden Affinity Group gathered at St. John's, Huntington, for a potluck supper, with representatives from five parish gardens. Conversation ranged from where to find good organic soil and how to keep the weeds in check to getting local community groups involved in the work.

Whether you're a longtime gardener or just getting started, there's a place for you in this group. To get involved, contact Sandra Senior at [email protected], or check episcopalministries.org/events

When garden coordinators at Common Ground Garden wanted to know what produce their community actually needed, they asked CAST North Fork, who runs the local food pantry. They learned local farms already donated surplus tomatoes, so the garden shifted to growing what wasn't being covered instead.

Garden coordinator Denise Market organizes the planting systematically around what's needed and when it harvests, while volunteer coordinator Cathy Melly makes sure a team is ready when it's time to bring the harvest in.

You'll find the garden's 26 beds next to the barn at Treiber Farms in Greenport — Peter Treiber donated the 50-by-100-foot plot that made it all possible, before he was even a member of the church.

Started by Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck and Holy Trinity in Greenport, Common Ground Garden is a ministry of the whole community — and we're proud to support this kind of grassroots, listening-first work on the North Fork!

Students at the Long Beach Martin Luther King Center have spent the last few weeks with one of our ministry partners learning the full gardening process, starting from seedlings and growing their own herb and vegetable garden!

This week, the students made pizza topped with vegetables from the St. James of Jerusalem, Long Beach, garden with a special sauce made by Father Michael. The kids are also growing their own vegetables and will return during harvest in a month or two to see the process through, following a curriculum developed by St. James' own ministry coordinators Laura and Barbara.
