Deuce was found by a PFP board member in SW Detroit emaciated and appeared to have injuries to his snout, mouth and possibly one side of his face/skull. After being examined by our vet and then Michigan State University Veterinary Oncology, a biopsy was preformed and it was determined that Deuce's tumor in his mouth and nasal cavity; is Ameloblastic Fibroma. The mass has taken over a great deal of
his upper palate and several of his teeth are missing and some appear to be encased in the mass. The mass has also gone into a portion of the nasal cavity. Deuce will require extensive oral surgery to remove what they can of the tumor and/or radiation treatment to shrink the tumor before removing it. We will know more once he has had a CT scan (which will cost $1200.00) and meets with the surgeon to get the exact treatment plan. The current vet is stating reconstruction of the mouth to remove the mass is most likely the best form of treatment. Since the mass has taken over so much of his pallet, we are not sure if radiation will be necessary or not yet. Right now he will rest comfortably while gaining weight (has gained a lot back already). We wanted to start chemo treatment to prevent further growth. However, since Deuce is in foster it has been to risky to expose our fosters and their animals to the chemo. Therefore we have started a holistic approach to help prevent the growth of the tumor. The estimated cost for reconstructive surgery with the CT scan, is estimated to be around $5000.00. The radiation treatment will cost roughly the same, above and beyond the CT scan and reconstructive surgery. At this time we are hoping the radiation treatment will not be necessary. However, this will be determined once we see the surgeon and CT Scan is complete. We are overjoyed that this tumor is not life threatening as they originally thought it was. As long as we can prevent the growth from spreading, Deuce just might have a chance to live a long and healthy life. PFP will do everything in it's power to try and help Deuce with his condition and find him a loving home that he so deserves. We will need to get started on some serious fundraising for Deuce to try and raise the funds he will need for his treatment. We have started his holistic treatment with a veterinarian that specializes in this form of treatment. He has started his acupuncture treatments, put on a special diet and is currently taking supplements to help slow down the growth. We are looking into magnetic and healing touch therapy also. There is a list of items at the bottom of the page of things we will need to maintain his holistic treatment. If you are willing to donate any of these items below, please contact us at [email protected]. Despite how Deuce looks and sounds sometimes, he is a happy boy of 5+ years old who has very good manners and appears to have had some training. Deuce was being fostered with other dogs and cats. He was learning that the cats are okay and is getting used to living around them. Deuce had also resided with a toddler of 2 years old. All interaction was supervised and it appears he was also trained to respect children. He tolerates temper tantrums and doesn't seem to care about a toddlers high activity level....he has handled it like a seasoned dog. He walks well on the lead and is very social. He has liked everyone he has met and enjoys getting some attention from them. He LOVES tennis balls & will play fetch and to carry around his stuffed animals. Thankfully he realizes he can not chew them apart and does not. Deuce will instigate play with his foster pals and joins in if he sees some playtime is about to happen. He is able to eat dry food, often sneaking some of his foster siblings bowl, however he is to try and stick to his holistic diet geared for tumors. Deuce does his daily functions normally. He has gained the weight he so desperately needed as well. We have found a new and wonderful foster family that was willing to take on a special needs dog to care for. A PFP adopter who has made their family pet, one spoiled fur baby. We know they will do the same for Deuce as well. The list below is Deuce's recipe for his special diet and supplements. If you can donate any of these items, it would be greatly appreciated! We need to invest all our funds into Deuce's medical care that he needs. Donations of the items below will help with saving the funds we generate monetarily for his medical care. His diet will consist of:
4 oz Pork Back Fat (boiled, baked or fried in olive oil)
4 oz Tofu (firm soybean curd)
2 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
