I’m very saddened and shocked to hear that Bill O’Bayley passed. I knew him from the Teamsters and from CSEA. A lot of people knew Bill as a fun laid back deadhead but I knew him best as a union advocate and a fighter for justice. He was never afraid to call out what he thought was wrong and was sincere when he wanted to help. I am sure everyone at the Garden City School District will mourn his loss with a heavy heart. We all hope his family will find peace and comfort in the memories he has created with them.

The Garden City School District has not settled a fair contract with members of the CSEA Nassau Educational Local 865 Non Instructional Unit. The Distrct is #2 on Long Island, for years, due in part to the CSEA members, the backbone and heart of the District. The Superintendent and the School Board are pushing for low raises below inflation. So, on the 136th anniversary of the Haymarket Affair, CSEA Unit President Helen Philmus and members of the Garden City Unit rallied to spread public awareness that they need a living wage and a fair contract. CSEA members will continue to stand up and spread the word. The members were supported by the CSEA Long Island Region 1 President Jarvis Brown and field staff. Fantastic photos by Wendi Bowie. Non-teaching members of CSEA have been out of contract with this Blue Ribbon School District since 7/01/23. This is because, despite respectful negotiations and appeals to the School Board, the District won’t offer enough money to our members anywhere close to inflation. The District has settled other contracts with other employees above the inflation rate. WHY NOT CSEA? We hope you will talk with our members about how you can help them get a living wage.
