What if connection doesn’t just happen ? What if we can design for it?

The WHO Commission on Social Connection highlights the importance of intentionally creating spaces and opportunities for people to interact and build meaningful relationships.

It got us thinking about what communities could look like when connection is at the heart of how they are built.

That’s the idea behind VillageCo and our Villages: creating spaces where people can come together around shared interests, participate, contribute and find a sense of belonging.

Because sometimes, building stronger communities starts with simply creating more opportunities to connect.

Meet John Adedeji!

This week, we’re shining a light on John Adedeji, a Weavership Intern who has been part of the VillageCo community for the past year.

John joined VillageCo because he believes communities should be partners in building solutions, not simply recipients of them, a value that closely reflects the kind of social impact work he hopes to be part of.

During his time with VillageCo, John has supported the Evaluation and Fundraising Circles, while growing personally and professionally along the way. The experience has helped him become more open-minded, see issues from different perspectives, connect with people across cultures, and build meaningful professional relationships.

One moment that stands out for him was presenting his Village Osun project at the YxY Weavership graduation ceremony, where he shared the social innovation journey his team had taken together.

But beyond the projects, John enjoys the sense of community, meeting people, exchanging ideas about global issues, and working together toward safer and more sustainable paths forward.

A fun fact about John: his research career grew from a question inspired by his dad's reaction to a vaccine - why can two people respond so differently to the same treatment?

A reminder that sometimes curiosity can become the beginning of a meaningful journey.

What happens when we make time to gather?

Sometimes, gathering is not easy.

There are busy schedules, long distances, family commitments, and all the other things that could fill the time instead.

The Silha Family Village Gathering reminds us that connection often begins with simply choosing to show up.

At VillageCo, our Village Gathering model is designed to create intentional spaces for people to come together through four simple practices:

Grounding — arriving and becoming present together.

Acknowledgement — recognizing what we are bringing into the space, including our experiences, relationships, challenges, and gratitude.

Community Connections — creating opportunities to know one another beyond the usual conversations and deepen our understanding of each other.

Open Space — leaving room for the stories, questions, reflections, and conversations that emerge naturally.

During the Silha Family Gathering, the acknowledgement beautifully captured this tension: even when gathering can feel like a big ask, making the time can leave us with something valuable — warmth, connection, deeper understanding, and a greater appreciation for the relationships and history we share.

And perhaps that is the heart of gathering.

We don't always know what will come from making the time.

But when we intentionally create the space to connect, something meaningful can happen.

Imagine moving into a new neighborhood where no one knows your name.

One day, a simple "hello" turns into a conversation. That conversation becomes a shared cup of tea. Before long, you've exchanged stories, celebrated milestones together, and found someone you can call when life gets difficult.

It didn't happen because you traveled far or met hundreds of people. It happened because one connection became the beginning of many.

Every person we meet brings a perspective we've never lived, a story we've never heard, and a chance to see the world a little differently.

That's the beauty of local connections, they remind us that even within our own neighborhoods, there is so much to discover.

It's a phrase many of us say, yet it reveals how easily we've come to equate our worth with our productivity.
