In today’s ABF video series, hear from our very own Vera Armstead MSW, LCSW!

As a clinical social worker, Vera understands that SCD impacts more than just the body. Chronic illness affects the mental and emotional health of all those living with SCD, their caregivers and their families.

When SCD patients and families are supported and empowered to share their unique experiences with the disease, we can increase access to mental health support and improve health outcomes for all of us who are impacted.

This story is a reminder that a diagnosis does not define a person.

In our latest video, we hear from a powerful individual living with Sickle Cell Disease who shares her truth: she is more than her condition, more than the challenges, and more than what others may assume. Her voice reflects resilience, identity, and the fullness of a life that cannot be reduced to a diagnosis.

At the Armstead-Barnhill Foundation, we are committed to amplifying stories like hers—stories that bring awareness, inspire compassion, and remind us of the humanity behind every condition.

Join us in supporting the fight against Sickle Cell Disease. Every contribution helps move us closer to better treatments options.

As part of our new campaign to introduce the different faces of ABF, we’re excited to highlight our longtime friend and board member, James Howard.

Jamie brings a unique - and necessary - perspective to our work from the medical research and pharmaceutical field. While we are seeing more promising results in treatment for Sickle Cell Disease than ever before, funding is still critical to supporting long-term advocacy, education and research efforts.

Please join us in amplifying diverse voices impacted most by Sickle Cell Disease. Donate today at curesicklecell.com to help us make a difference. 🩸💪🏿

Dr. Angella Dorothea Ferguson, who recently passed away at the age of 100, was a pioneering pediatrician whose groundbreaking research in the 1950s significantly advanced the early diagnosis and treatment of Sickle Cell Disease. Dr. Ferguson developed a blood test capable of diagnosing Sickle Cell Disease in infants and children, a critical step toward earlier intervention and improved patient outcomes.

She also championed the importance of proper hydration for individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease to promote better circulation of sickled cells, and she advocated for the use of oxygen during medical procedures to help reduce complications.

The Armstead-Barnhill Foundation extends sincere gratitude to Dr. Ferguson for her unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to the field of Sickle Cell research and care.
