Moody Methodist Troop History



1919 - Troops were formed by the Galveston Rotary Club for Galveston Council and ran by them until the Troop was strong enough to be adopted by a Charter partner. Troop 7 started in 1919.



1929 - The First Methodist Church (CurrentlyMoody methodist Church) adopted Troop 7 from the Rotary and became the official charter partner.



1937 - Galveston Council officially became Bay Area Council.



1951 - Districts were introduced. Troop 7 was in Island District.



1968 - Troop 7 became Troop 107. This was because the council changed boundaries. Bay Area Council once covered Matagorda, Brazoria, and Galveston Counties. All units adopted new 3-digit numbers in the council.



1984 - The Troop changed numbers again to 124. The Council Districts once again changed their boundaries and names. (Island District became Coastal District, current.)



First Methodist Church: Circa 1901

In 1901, a new Mission-style church designed by architect George B. Stowe was built at 19th & Sealy. The new building incorporated the cornerstones of St. John’s and St. James churches, as well as the bell from St. James. In 1906, the trustees voted to change the church’s name to First Methodist Church. (Today’s Central Methodist Church, at 33rd Street and Avenue O1/2, was founded as West End Methodist Church, South, in 1886; church trustees voted to adopt its present name in 1939.)



Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church: Circa 1963 - Now

As a result of the provision in the will of a faithful member of the church, Mrs. Libby Shearn Moody, the name was changed to Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church at the Annual Conference session of 1963. A portion of the former Fort Crockett property was selected as the site of the new church building and groundbreaking ceremonies were held January 22, 1962. The completed building was presented to the congregation free of all indebtedness at the service of dedication on Sunday, February 16, 1964.

Important Membership Renewal Update

Scouting America has announced an important change to the membership renewal process. The current membership lapse (grace) period will be phased out and will officially end on December 31, 2026.

What’s Changing?

The membership lapse period has allowed members a short grace period after their renewal date before becoming inactive. As Scouting America simplifies its renewal process, that grace period will gradually be reduced and then eliminated.

Timeline

October 2026 Renewals
• Last members to receive the full 2-month lapse period

November 2026 Renewals
• 1-month lapse period

December 2026 Renewals
• No lapse period

Beginning September 2026, new and renewing units will pay the standard charter fee plus prorated membership fees through February 2028.

Beginning January 1, 2027, all members must maintain a current registration to remain active. Expired memberships may impact participation, advancement, leadership eligibility, and registration status.

Now is a great time for unit leaders, committee members, and families to review renewal dates and plan ahead to avoid any interruption in membership.

Additional information will be shared as Scouting America continues implementing its updated membership and renewal process.
