When he was just 6 years old, Johnny was running through his grandmother’s house in Panama when he turned and ran straight into a glass door. The impact caused a deep laceration to his right thigh, damaging his sciatic nerve. Following the accident, Johnny began to lose feeling in his leg, and his family began to seek further care.

A few years later, Johnny underwent a tendon transfer surgery in his home country, but the outcome fell short, leaving him with pain and discomfort. Just when Johnny felt like he was running out of options, his family turned to Shriners Children’s Texas.

“We did serial casting to stretch the foot and then a surgery to realign and rebalance the foot,” Dr. Cody Sanderson, Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, said. “Johnny is now walking in an AFO [ankle-foot orthosis] and on the road to recovery. He is a competitive swimmer and is happy to get back to Panama and keep swimming.”

A hospital “big brother” to many younger patients, 16 year old Johnny has left a mark, participating in many hospital-wide events like Lemonade Day and Mardi Gras. Click the link in our bio to read his full story.💥

Twin sisters. Together in a whole new way.✨

Sabrina Ramirez was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and, at 5 months old, underwent an amputation of her right leg due to a blood clot.

Because of the complexity of her condition - including an extremely short femur and significant muscle spasticity - traditional prosthetic options weren’t possible. What remained of Sabrina’s leg stayed positioned out to the side, making prosthetic design challenging.

Sabrina’s care required something more.
At Shriners Children’s Texas, a multidisciplinary team came together to reimagine what was possible for her.

Hannah Zesiger, CPO (Certified Prosthetist-Orthotist) designed and fit Sabrina with a highly customized hip disarticulation-style prosthesis. While Sabrina has an anatomical hip, it doesn’t function - so her device includes a prosthetic hip joint, a locking knee, and a wedged foot to give her the stability she needs to stand, move, and participate in everyday activities.

Kelsey Zeigler, PT, used a mechanical lift to safely support Sabrina’s body weight, helping her gradually learn to stand on her prosthesis. She also led a week-long intensive, ensuring the device was comfortable and functional for Sabrina’s daily life.

Angie Espinoza, Music Therapist, played a critical role in keeping Sabrina calm, engaged, and motivated throughout long and often challenging appointments. Angie helped her stay relaxed during molding, fittings, and adjustments.

The prosthesis is designed for flexibility. It’s comfortable enough for all-day wear or for targeted therapeutic use.

And why is standing so important?

Standing supports circulation, builds core strength, and promotes healthy digestion. But for Sabrina, it also means dancing with her sister. 💜

Today, the Calvert-Currey family visited our hospital to unveil a newly installed naming plaque honoring Mary and Shelton Calvert, longtime supporters of Shriners Children’s Texas.

The plaque, displayed in our second-floor coffee area, recognizes the Calverts’ legacy and lasting impact on our mission. We are extremely grateful for donors like the Calvert-Currey family, whose generosity makes a difference in the care we provide children each day. ♥️
