We enjoyed walking through and learning about our Galveston Native plants so much during our Bingo Native Plant Walk that we can't wait to do it again this fall to see the change of season in the UU Garden.

Thank you Denice Franke for leading the Plant Bingo Walk & for always sharing so much valuable knowledge with us all, and also to Galveston Plant Life for sending all of yesterday's attendees home with tomato plants.

If you didn't get to make it & missed out on buying a few native Perrenis Milkweeds, DM us & we can put you in contact with who to purchase them from on the island this week.

Big news — our chapter is teaming up with Moody Gardens for a hands-on, community-powered garden restoration project, and we’d love for you to jump in with us!

We’re helping bring their large native garden space back to life: clearing out invasives, refreshing the beds, planting natives, and creating a space that truly reflects the beauty of our island.

We’ve lined up several work days so everyone can find a time that fits. Come to one, come to all — every pair of hands makes a difference.

🦺 Sunday, February 22nd, 9 AM - 12 PM: Remove invasives, trim bed edges and concrete joints, stake up bushy blue stem, clean possum grape vine out of serpentine, clean up concrete planters as needed, collect seed for replanting later

🦺 Saturday, March 21st, 9 AM - 12 PM: Finish additional cleanup, add soil to beds where needed, add plants or trellising if available, water in new plants

🦺 Saturday, April 11th, 9 AM - 12 PM: Trim edges and clean up as needed, add new plants as available, water in new plants, install graphics and plant markers if available.

Don't forget to bring gloves and a water bottle!

If you’re able to join us, comment below and let us know. Bring a friend if you want! The more the merrier, and the faster this garden comes back to life!

Who doesn't like to see this golden beacon every spring and fall? Able to withstand the salt spray, Seaside Goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens) is blooming along the northern end of our Texas coast as it is just starting to bloom on South Padre Island. Like Mistflower, Goldenrod is a pollinator magnet. It is not uncommon to see butterflies weighing down the bright cluster of flowers before they continue their journey.

And though we celebrate Seaside Goldenrod this week, chances are good you have your own Solidago blooming near you. As each Fall and Spring Migration takes place, some 115 species of Goldenrod lights the way across North America with roughly 25 illuminating Texas.

Are you seeing Goldenrod near you? Please share your images with NPSOT by emailing it to us at [email protected].

Distribution: npsot.org/posts/native-plant/solidago-sempervirens/
Seasonality: inaturalist.org/taxa/954006-Solidago-mexicana

One final note, though Seaside Goldenrod emits pollen, it is not the cause of hay fever as believed by so many people. Goldenrod pollen is too heavy to be effectively dispersed by wind.

🎶The sage in bloom is like perfume 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Deep in the heart of Texassss!🎵

Great little propagation lesson from Texas Garden Guy! Who else is a big fan of Texas silver star sage? It’s a favorite of this chapter’s officers!
