Hey Surfrider! Check out this incredibly fun, social opportunity to support an organization that supports us and so much of what we love. Clean Galveston, Inc. gives out thousands of dollars in grants every year to organizations like Galveston Surfrider, to help keep Galveston clean, green, and pristine. They are also the island coordinator for Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Program and they join us in the Mardi Gras Umbrella Parade!!

The Ocean Needs More Friends... In Your Gardens! 🌊🌿

Join us for this month's Surfrider gathering from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM and discover how your garden can make a positive impact on our local environment.

🌱 Hear from Cat Schulz, our very own Frogfruit Fairy, as she shares tips on cultivating an Ocean Friendly (Native Plant) Garden. She'll even be bringing frogfruit starter strands to help you begin your own garden journey, plus a few Mosquito Bucket starter kits for lucky Surfrider community members to take home!

🥕 Meet Keaton, Gardens Director for Groundswell, who manages the Young Gardeners Program on GISD campuses and the Victory Gardens Project. These incredible programs provide our island community with thousands of pounds of fresh, local produce each year.

🌼 Learn about Surfrider's Ocean Friendly Garden Program, take a tour of one of Groundswell's community gardens at Oppe Elementary (located next door to DRIFT Poolside Kitchen & Bar), and hear from local members about how they're creating impactful garden spaces of their own.

🌿 No yard? No problem! Container gardens count, too.

✨ Plus, be the first to hear about our first community Ocean Friendly Garden project launching in 2027 and learn how you can get involved.

Whether you're an experienced gardener or just getting started, there's a place for you in this growing movement.

The FAA is currently accepting public comments on issues related to SpaceX operations, and the comment period closes August 31.

🌊 We encourage our Galveston community to submit a comment through Surfrider’s Action Alert. Please take a few extra minutes to personalize and edit the suggested letter. Unique comments have a greater impact and are counted more effectively than identical form submissions.

Every voice matters when it comes to protecting our coast, water quality, wildlife, and beach access.

Last week's meeting was such a fantastic event. We had over 40 people turn up for some fun lessons about our sandy beaches, we found critters (we put said critters back safely!), and we enjoyed fellowship about protecting and enjoying our ocean, waves, and beaches. Surfrider is for anyone who loves the coast and the water - follow along with upcoming events, where you can find us around the island, and how you can volunteer and get involved with this amazing community 🌊

🌊✨ More Than Just Sand: The Secret Life & Value of Sandy Beaches

Sandy beaches may look like simple stretches of sand, but they’re vibrant ecosystems supporting incredible biodiversity while protecting our coastlines from storms and sea‑level rise. 🌾🦀

Join us August 13 • 6–8 PM • Beerfoot Brewery for an interactive field experience with Drs. Guilherme Corte & Yasmina Shah Esmaeili, where you’ll uncover the hidden life beneath your feet and learn how scientists measure beach health through surveys of organisms, sediments, and environmental conditions. 🌱🔬

We’ll wrap up with a discussion led by Drs. Virgie Greb & Ashley Ross on the social value of our beaches and the challenges we face in ensuring their resilience. 💙🌴

At 6 PM, we’ll meet on the beach in front of Beerfoot — join us there or walk over with the group if you arrive early and aren’t sure where to go!

🌮 After an hour on the beach, we’ll head back to Beerfoot for light bites. Bring reusable plateware/utensils to help us cut down on waste.
