Last week's meeting was such a fantastic event. We had over 40 people turn up for some fun lessons about our sandy beaches, we found critters (we put said critters back safely!), and we enjoyed fellowship about protecting and enjoying our ocean, waves, and beaches. Surfrider is for anyone who loves the coast and the water - follow along with upcoming events, where you can find us around the island, and how you can volunteer and get involved with this amazing community 🌊

Their partnership helps us keep cigarette butts and other litter off our beaches, making a real difference for our coast and our community.

🌊✨ More Than Just Sand: The Secret Life & Value of Sandy Beaches

Sandy beaches may look like simple stretches of sand, but they’re vibrant ecosystems supporting incredible biodiversity while protecting our coastlines from storms and sea‑level rise. 🌾🦀

Join us August 13 • 6–8 PM • Beerfoot Brewery for an interactive field experience with Drs. Guilherme Corte & Yasmina Shah Esmaeili, where you’ll uncover the hidden life beneath your feet and learn how scientists measure beach health through surveys of organisms, sediments, and environmental conditions. 🌱🔬

We’ll wrap up with a discussion led by Drs. Virgie Greb & Ashley Ross on the social value of our beaches and the challenges we face in ensuring their resilience. 💙🌴

📍 Location: Backroom of Beerfoot Brewery

At 6 PM, we’ll meet on the beach in front of Beerfoot — join us there or walk over with the group if you arrive early and aren’t sure where to go!

🌮 After an hour on the beach, we’ll head back to Beerfoot for light bites. Bring reusable plateware/utensils to help us cut down on waste.

Thank you everyone who came out to join Surfrider Galveston and Turtle Island Restoration Network - Gulf of Mexico for a downtown butt and trash cleanup!

Very last minute for the public comment opening BUT this is why we say DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS BEACHES! it not only applies to the health and well-being of the ecosystem, but to the free and fair public access we have as a constitutional right in Texas. This is yet another distracting idea from what really protects our beaches for ALL people 🌊
