Meet the GIHS Pets of the Week, Aries and Comet!

🐾🐾🐾

Meet Aries, a 3-year-old gentle giant with a personality much softer than his mighty name suggests. This big gray guy can be a little slow to warm up and selective about his feline friends, but give him time (and maybe a scratch pad or two!) and you’ll find a cuddly, affectionate companion underneath. Aries previously lived with a teenager, so he’s no stranger to a busy household. Win his trust, and this big guy is all yours. 🩶

Meet Comet! ☄️ This gentle girl can be a little shy at first, but with some patience—and a few treats—her sweet personality quickly shines through. Comet loves following her nose, exploring at her own pace, and showing off her adorable “sit pretty” for a snack. She’s looking for a patient, loving home where she can build confidence and blossom into the loyal companion we know she can be.

🐾 MEET BO: A VERY SPECIAL MEET & GREET 🐾

At 12 years old, BO is currently our longest-term resident. His journey with us began when he and his owner were both found in need of medical assistance. BO spent several weeks at The Animal Clinic, where he was given the time and care he needed to grow stronger and healthier.

Since then, life has carried BO between the shelter and a loving foster home. His foster had nothing but wonderful things to say about him, and told us that, had circumstances been different, she would have happily kept him longer. But as a medical student, her academic journey eventually took her away from Galveston, and BO returned to us once again.

And still, he waits.

Thankfully, BO has made some friends along the way. ❤️ His story traveled far enough that the wonderful folks at Rita’s reached out and offered to host a special Meet & Greet just for him!

Come meet BO, give this handsome senior gentleman some love, and help us spread his story a little farther.

Because after everything this old boy has been through, we’d really love for the next chapter of his story to begin with: “BO went home.”

Today we’re breaking down the many ways even temporarily opening your home can make a BIG difference for shelter pets. From freeing up kennel space to helping animals decompress and showing us who they really are outside the shelter, fosters are an essential part of what we do.

Long-term or short, fostering makes a lasting difference. ❤️

It’s time for another round of Happy Tails! 🐾💛

This week, we’re checking in with Beau, Jackie, Sophie, and Odin & Kuromi to see how life after adoption is treating them. Spoiler alert: we think they’re doing pretty well. 🥰

Nothing makes us happier than seeing our former shelter pets right where they belong!

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to the Mary Moody Northen Endowment for generously gifting GIHS four beautiful handmade wooden picnic tables!

These tables have already made a meaningful difference around the shelter. Placed in several spots around the facility, they’ve given our staff a comfortable outdoor spot to gather and recharge during breaks, and more space for visitors, staff, and volunteers to sit and spend time with our dogs.

But if you ask our pets, the best benefit of these tables is now having their own agility equipment. Whether they’re hopping onto the benches, climbing across them, or, like Rowan (pictured), standing proudly on top to survey their kingdom, the tables have quickly become a source of enrichment and fun.

Sometimes a gift makes a difference in more ways than you'd expect!

Thank you, Mary Moody Northen Endowment, for investing in our people, our visitors, our volunteers, and our budding canine parkour team.
