After the 1900 hurricane, Galveston didn't just build a seawall. It attempted something that had never been done anywhere in the world at that scale.

Engineers proposed raising the elevation of the entire island.

Every building, every street, every church, every cemetery. The plan called for dredging sand from the Gulf floor and pumping it under the city through a canal system. More than 2,000 structures were lifted on hydraulic jacks while the ground was filled in beneath them.

This photograph shows it actually happening. Those eruptions of water and sand in the street are the pumps forcing fill material under the raised buildings. The houses in the background are sitting on temporary supports while the island literally rises around them.

The grade raising added up to 17 feet of elevation in some areas. It took years. It cost millions. When the 1915 hurricane arrived with the same force as 1900, the island that once sat at sea level was standing above the storm surge.

Galveston didn't just build a wall against the Gulf. It changed the shape of the land itself. ⚡🌊
