Book Review: Dark Water Rising by Marian Hale

Dark Water Rising is a powerful historical novel set in Galveston during the Great Storm of 1900. The book is especially meaningful to residents of our neighborhood because much of the story takes place in familiar parts of Galveston. The house that survives the storm is located on 35th Street, right in our neighborhood. Many local streets, buildings, and landmarks are also featured throughout the story, and Galveston readers will recognize many of the places described.

The story follows a teenage boy named Seth Braeden, whose family moves to the growing island city shortly before the hurricane strikes. Seth’s experiences during the storm force him to discover courage, responsibility, and the importance of helping others.
As we read about families seeking shelter, homes being damaged, and neighbors helping one another, it is easy to imagine similar scenes taking place along the streets where we live today. Marian Hale brings Galveston’s history to life and reminds us that our neighborhood is part of a community that survived one of the deadliest natural disasters in American history.

Dark Water Rising is an emotional and educational story about tragedy, courage, resilience, and the determination of Galvestonians to rebuild their homes and their city.
