Thank you Sea Camp - Texas A&M University Galveston Campus for braving the weather this morning to come out and learn about the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network and our mission!

They got a taste of what our work entails since strandings don't stop for storms!

๐Ÿ“ฃ๐Ÿฌ Weโ€™re pleased to announce that yesterday marked the launch of the National Marine Mammal Stranding Association (NMMSA), the first national organization dedicated to supporting the people and programs that respond to stranded marine mammals across the U.S.!

Marine mammal stranding response is a critical part of marine conservation, animal welfare, and ocean health monitoring. Yet responders and individual orgs often face growing demands with limited resources, funding, and opportunities for coordinated training and support. The creation of NMMSA reflects a nationwide commitment to strengthening the response network through greater collaboration, professional development, resource sharing, and advocacy.

The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network was honored to participate in the June meeting in Bethesda, Maryland, where marine mammal response leaders from across the country gathered to help advance this important initiative. Bringing together organizations from every region highlighted both the unique challenges we face locally and the shared need for a stronger, more connected and well supported national stranding community.

For Texas, where responders cover hundreds of miles of Gulf coastline and work around the clock year-round to rescue, investigate, and monitor stranded marine mammals, stronger national collaboration means greater access to shared expertise, resources, and support for the long-term sustainability of stranding response efforts.

We congratulate the steering committee and all of the organizations that helped bring this vision to life and look forward to seeing the positive impact NMMSA will have on marine mammal conservation and response nationwide.

Today was a WHALE of a way to spend World Oceans Day! ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ‹

Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network, alongside our partners from SeaWorld San Antonio completed training at our Galveston Rescue and Rehab Center on whale flotation pontoons, specialized equipment that can lift up to five tons to support stranded medium-sized whales.

TMMSN is one of four organizations selected to receive these pontoons as part of a Deepwater Horizon Open Ocean Project "Reducing Impacts to Cetaceans during Disasters by Improving Response Activities". These pontoons, and our new whale friend, came with their own trainers all the way from Scotland! James McKenzie and Martin "Boonie" Boon of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) traveled across the pond to train our team firsthand. Their expertise and commitment to global marine mammal welfare is inspiring.

To James and Boonie: thank you for making the trek. You're welcome back on the Gulf Coast any time (the tacos are on us). ๐ŸŒŠ ๐ŸŒฎ

One thing we love about summer is getting to interact with inspiring marine mammalogists through our educational programs!

This morning Sea Camp - Texas A&M University Galveston Campus Marine Mammal group visited the TMMSN Rehabilitation and Research Center to get a behind the scenes look at marine mammal conservation efforts along the TX coast.

We look forward to working with you all in the future as you pursue careers in marine sciences!

๐ŸฌThank you to everyone who joined us for our Dolphin Conservation Workshop today, and a huge applause for our volunteers who worked hard to put it on! ๐Ÿ‘

It was inspiring to spend the day with future conservationists and community members exploring all four pillars of our mission: Rescue, Rehabilitation, Research, and Education. Together, we learned how each plays an important role in protecting dolphins and promoting healthy ecosystems. โ›‘๏ธ๐Ÿฅผ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ“š

If you missed this workshop, donโ€™t worry, our next Dolphin Conservation Workshop is scheduled for November. We hope to see you there!

Even on holidays the TMMSN is always on call. If you see a stranded, entangled, or out of habitat marine mammal in need please report it immediately to 1-800-9MAMMAL (1-800-962-6625).

Never push stranded animals back into the sea, they strand for a reason and likely require medical intervention.

During summer months, manatees are known to visit the Texas coast. Manatees can be very difficult to spot, especially when visibility is low and in areas where they may not be anticipated. Be on the lookout, wear polarized shades, take it slow, and be manatee mindful if you're out enjoying the water this holiday weekend (or all summer long!). ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Remember to report ALL manatee sightings in Texas to TMMSN at 1-800-9MAMMAL and provide a photo or video if possible.
