Sumner County CASA A non profit that recruits and trains volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children. Sumner County CASA is a non-profit, United Way agency.

CASA recruits community volunteers and trains them to become the voices of alleged abused or neglected children in the juvenile court system. Volunteers are appointed to serve kids that are in the custody of the state of TN and Sumner County CASA volunteers are also appointed to children that are at risk of entering custody. The court system appoints CASA to a child’s case when there are concerns that there is more going on in children’s lives than what is being represented in the courtroom. The CASA volunteer becomes the “eyes and ears” for the judge, giving the judge a unique, lay person’s view into the child’s life. Sumner County CASA is a United Way and TCCY funded agency.

A child's health includes so much more than physical checkups. Emotional well-being, developmental needs, a safe home, and consistent support all play a role in how a child grows.

For a child in foster care, one consistent adult can make a meaningful difference. World Mental Health Day on October 10th reminds us that stability, routine, and being heard often matter as much as anything else in a child's week.

CASA volunteers aren't therapists, caregivers, or caseworkers, and they never try to replace any of them. Instead, they check in regularly, listen to what a child wants adults to understand, notice when something seems off, and help make sure those concerns and wishes reach the court. Over the months a case stays open, that steady presence can help a child feel a little safer while much of their situation remains uncertain.

Heroes don't always wear capes. Sometimes they show up, listen, and speak up for a child who needs someone in their corner. National Hero Day on October 8th is a good moment to recognize the CASA volunteers doing exactly that across Sumner County.

A CASA volunteer is a trained community member appointed to act as the eyes and ears of the judge for a child in foster care. They get to know the child by listening, talking with the people in that child's life, and making sure the child is safe. They bring what they learn and what the child wants back to the court. For many children in foster care, a CASA volunteer is often the only consistent, familiar face they have.

Becoming one involves an application, an interview, 30 hours of training, and a swearing-in. Most volunteers advocate for one child, or one family of children, at a time, so it's a commitment you can carry alongside the rest of your life. Children in foster care need dedicated advocates throughout the year, not just during times of crisis. CASA volunteers help ensure children have a voice in court and work toward safe, stable, and permanent outcomes.
