We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been awarded an Animal Welfare grant from Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee! This support fuels our mission of working with law enforcement agencies on cases of equine abuse and neglect. The funds will help us feed and provide medical attention for our horses in various stages of rehabilitation.

This week we lost two of our long term residents, this is Cat’s story. 🐴🌈
Cat “Cat Patrol” came in as an owner surrender. He had a career on the track and eventually was well loved by an older couple, but when the husband died and the wife was overwhelmed with his care, he came to us.
He was like a giant, anxiety ridden lap dog in the body of a 16hh thoroughbred. He wanted simultaneously to do his own thing and crawl right inside your skin.
His favorite thing was to be scratched or bathed and he loved a good roll after either.
He was our resident grumpy old man until he was fostered out to our incredible foster, Vickie, who took incredible care of him.
A freak accident in the pasture meant we had to say an unexpected goodbye. The accident happened the night before we said goodbye to Autumn, his pasture mate- so perhaps he knew and it was a bit of a Romeo and Juliet situation.
Either way, we celebrate a life well lived and well loved by this sweet old man.
Until we meet again, Cat Patrol 🌈🐴

This week we lost two of our long term residents, this is Autumn’s story. 💕🐴
Autumn came into the rescue in September 2021 starved and neglected.
Autumn had just weaned a foal and we were worried she may be pregnant.
While Autumn wasn’t pregnant, she was terrified of absolutely everything. Volunteers and trainers spent months working with her to make her catchable & to teach her to trust, she came a long way but it certainly took a long time.
Autumn blossomed the most when she went to foster with our incredible foster, Vickie.
We knew Vickie could handle a horse that not only mentally and emotionally was a little harder, but Autumn also had some physical things going on too.
Unfortunately, Autumn’s body continued to work against her, despite her personality blossoming while in foster and we all decided it was best to say goodbye on a good day.
Autumn loved to have an opinion, she loved to make sure you knew things were her idea, she was a picky eater, and you could always find a photo in your camera roll with her tongue sticking out.
Autumn was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Until we meet again, sweet girl 🌈

Since 2003, Volunteer Equine Advocates has worked to rescue, rehabilitate, and advocate for abused, neglected, and abandoned equines across Middle Tennessee. What began with a single cruelty case in Sumner County has grown into a mission that has helped more than 1,600 equines find safety, care, and second chances.

Every day, our volunteers work hard to provide the best possible care for the horses at our rescue. One simple way we can improve their lives—and make daily care more efficient—is by upgrading our watering system.

We’re raising funds for freeze-proof, low-maintenance automatic waterers that provide fresh, clean water on demand. These systems will save countless volunteer hours spent scrubbing and maintaining water troughs, especially during the summer months, while ensuring our horses always have access to clean water.

Brazil is 27 but you would never know it.
She’s brave, opinionated, and still SO capable. Here she is doing her pony Pilates, working on climbing on objects, balancing, and learning to use her body thoughtfully.

We always love having Dr. Barbara Parks out to visit us! She’s an incredible physical therapist that really understands our horses bodies and the way that they should be moving and can teach us how to get them there through soft and easy exercises!
She’s truly such a gift to our organization!

Josie came in pretty defensive about… everything, but especially her feet!
She’s now flourishing and her feet are too! She’s available for adoption but requires a dry lot (no grass).
Send us a message with any questions about her or any of our other horses!
