YOUTH CAMP
Honestly, 13 can be the perfect age for camp.
It is an age when kids are ready for a little more independence, new friendships, and experiences that help build confidence, but sending your 13-year-old to camp can feel like a big leap.
A lot of caregivers wonder how their child will do away from home, whether they will make friends, or what happens if they get homesick. Those are real and thoughtful questions.
I’m Ashley, the Youth Director at Special Camps. I’m also an elementary art teacher, so I spend my days with kids this age. I know how big this stage can feel. They want independence, but they still need support.
That is exactly how we approach youth camp.
Homesickness is normal. We expect it. Our staff knows how to help campers settle in, build connections, and feel comfortable in a new environment from Day One.
By the end of the week, it is often amazing to see how much confidence can grow when kids feel safe, included, and capable. Some of the campers who are most unsure at drop-off are the ones who leave feeling proud of themselves.
If you have questions or want to talk through whether camp feels like the right fit for your child, I’d be happy to connect!
