Mission Statement: Connecting the Galesburg community to its roots through the tools, stories and spirit of the people who built Neosho County. The Galesburg Museum: Built by the Community, for the Community. The Galesburg Museum

is more than a collection of artifacts—it is a story of local grit and volunteer spirit. Born from the vision of neighbors who refused to let our history fade, our museum was built by hand and heart. Our story began in the town’s original 1903 bank. When the building transitioned from a bank to the local Post Office and eventually sat vacant, our volunteers stepped in. With fresh paint, donated labor, and a shared mission to preserve the history of Galesburg, we officially opened our doors in 2003. In 2005, when a nearby historic building faced demolition, the Galesburg community rallied together to save its spirit. While the structure couldn't be rescued, we salvaged the original storefront windows and integrated them into a new facility built to replicate the town's favorite gathering place for milkshakes or cinnamon candies, Carl and Mary Whipple’s Cafe. Today, the museum’s facade stands as a permanent tribute to the many local families whose businesses once lined our streets. What You’ll Find Inside

Industrial Heritage: An extensive display of equipment, photographs, and advertising material from Shaw Manufacturing, showcasing Galesburg’s history of innovation. Our collection also traces the town's manufacturing evolution into the Bush Hog era. After Bush Hog purchased Shaw in 1962, Galesburg remained a hub for producing garden tractors and mowers until 1986. We are actively expanding our collection of Bush Hog memorabilia to honor the generations of local residents who worked there. We are currently accepting Bush Hog related items for donation. Our Roots: From Galesburg High School to Shaw Du-All tractor, Bush Hog mowers and long-forgotten Galesburg businesses we preserve the faces and tools of our ancestors. Take the time to research our community by looking through one of the many "research notebooks" put together by Lucille Janssen. Topics include, obituaries, elementary school class photos, veterans and military, Galesburg businesses, county township maps from the early 1900's, as well as some information on individual families. We remain 100% volunteer-led and are funded by the generosity of private donors. Whether you are a lifelong resident, an alumni "coming home" or a visitor passing through, we welcome you! Come see what a small town with a big heart can do. Want to help us preserve our history? Your tax-deductible donations make our work possible!
