Galena in December already has a lot going for it. We just thought it was missing a few hundred Santas. 🎅

Galena SantaCon 2026 is bringing together a holiday-themed 5K, accessibility and adaptive participation, community giving, holiday fun, and a whole lot of Santas in one very Galena kind of day.

And yes… we’re planning to keep the fun going on Main Street into the evening. 👀

Galena SantaCon 2026 is coming to downtown Galena on Saturday, December 5, in collaboration with the Holidaze Festival!

We’ve added an Audible Visions QR code to the plaque describing the Grant Statue and the iconic Grant Park concrete letters, giving visitors a new way to experience two of Galena’s most photographed landmarks.

With a simple scan, you can listen to audio descriptions and historical information using your own smartphone, making these locations more accessible to people with low vision while adding another layer of discovery for everyone.

Audible Visions is a nonprofit organization who aims to make art, media, entertainment, and tourism more accessible to people with low vision and other disabilities. Audible Visions primarily serves the Galena area, hoping to expand to other regions around Illinois and Nationally.

Audio Description (AD) is a service that can be provided, either pre-recorded or in a live setting. AD is a secondary audio track that offers another way to access the visual components of a performance for individuals who cannot see. AD is beneficial to people with visual impairment, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Autism, and more. Audible Visions will focus on this service initially, eventually adding other accessibility services.

More stories are coming to life! 🎧

Today we added a few more Audible Visions QR codes to historic plaques along the Galena River. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at installing one on the “Galena’s Steamboats” plaque, along with a short sample of the audio description visitors can hear with a simple scan.

Each QR code makes Galena’s history more accessible by allowing visitors to listen to historical information and audio descriptions using their own smartphone.
