This page is being retired. It was started by the non-profit organization, Harlem Community Playground (HCP), with the intent of documenting and encouraging the development of our playground. As far as we can tell the heavy lifting is finished. The installation of equipment is complete. The playground passed a thorough inspection at the end of summer. HCP's work is done and the non-profit certification relinquished. Thank you all for your support. Enjoy the park and playground. That's what it's there for. Pass it on. Harlem up! If you went to Harlem Day today in the park, you may have seen the photos on display showing the events that have culminated in our present playground. Back in 2019, Chuck and Karen Bachman made the observation that our park was nice, but we needed "something for the kids". They also wanted to honor the memory of their son, John H. Bachman, who died as a teenager. They formed a non-profit organization named "Harlem Community Playground" (HCP), which over the next four years would plan, prod, pitch in, and process donations to convert a little used baseball diamond into a multi-use playground. They and the other members of HCP (Jerry and Gayle Paul, Linda Sue Skinner, and Ed Valeska) have realized their collective dream with the installation of the final pieces, the spring riders. Our job is done. HCP will cease to be an entity. The photos tell the story. The laughter of the children rings out with endorsement. Enjoy the playground. That's all we ever wanted. Harlem up!

The spring riders are rockin' and the kids are not stoppin'. Thanks to Manuel and family for sharing their joy.

Looking for a handy person who can repair the Township's outdoor bulletin board in Neil Alley next to 3784 Rich St. (the Township Maintenance Garage). The problem is that it has sliding plexiglas doors which let in moisture, ruining notices and corkboard alike. Is anyone out there clever and skilled enough to solve this issue and save this structure?

Progress, thanks to volunteers...six new picnic tables assembled and two spring riders set in concrete (should be open to the public on 6/22/23). Harlem up!

June 3rd, another productive volunteer workday. Among other things, we dug up gravelly dirt near the water fountain and replaced it with good topsoil for new grass seed. Now DelCo Water says not to water lawns until June 6th. (Don't turn me in!) No workday on June 10 (Ohio Senior Olympics track events at Westerville Central High School). Here's a look at a unique commemorative tree at the park, an American Yellowwood.

May 27th...a very productive workday in cooperative weather at last. Such a fun way to spend a Saturday morning. "Same time, same station", on June 3rd. Yippee!

05/26/2023

May 20th...another rainy workday. Still, incremental progress was made with the needed weeding and pruning. In the meantime a couple of intrepid volunteers and Bart Walker, the Township's maintenance chief, put down fresh mulch around three-quarters of the trees. One more load will be delivered tomorrow. In the annual tradition of rescheduling workdays until the weather cooperates and the chores are done, the Friends Of Our Park (FOOP) will press on from 9 to noon on Saturday, May 27. The offer of fizzy drinks and Fracasso's pizza afterwards is still good.

Well, the weather got the better of us this time. We postponed the volunteer workday until May 20th, but still managed to spread sand under the old swings and remove weeds from about half of the area south of the playground. Little by little, Step by step. Happy Mothers' Day, folks.

Volunteer workday in the park...Saturday, May 13th, 9-noon, with pizza to follow. We'll be inspecting the playground equipment to make sure everything is ship-shape, plus doing other odd jobs on the park grounds: cleaning, weeding, staining, etc. In case of rain, we'll postpone it until May 20th. C'mon, FOOPers (Friends Of Our Park). Many hands make light work.

Today, in a cooperative effort between Harlem Community Playground and the Township Trustees, we are ordering the final two pieces of equipment for the playground: spring riders in the form of a duck and a turtle. They'll go in between the red Cloud Nine swing and the IKO climber. Weight limit on this equipment is 65 pounds, so let the little ones enjoy them. They will go in side-by-side, so there should be some nice interaction between riders. I'll post a notice when we need help installing them. Ride on! By the way, this will be the last act of the non-profit organization Harlem Community Playground, founded by Chuck and Karen Bachman. Without their motivational leadership and vision, there would be no playground. Here's to the Bachmans!
