Friends of the Galatia Public Library District

Friends of the Galatia Public Library District Why do libraries need "Friends of the Library" groups like us? We are a strong community voice for our library!

Our library needs us because we provide additional funds (fund-raising) allowing them to expand their resources, programs, and services. Friends of Galatia Public Library District (Galatia, Illinois), a non-profit organization, began in October 2011. That small group of ladies believed that our community became a better place when the Galatia Public Library District opened its doors. It is a priv

ilege to have a great library and caring librarians in our neighborhood! Building on what the charter members established, the Friends group will continue strive to network with businesses and organizations to make a good impact on not just our library, but on our community as well. We hope to be a great influence on everyone we reach out to, especially the students in the Galatia School District. Friends is a vital part of the Galatia District Library District. We are happy to say that we have accomplished many things that have benefited our library, our students, and our community. We could not have done so much without the support of all those living within (and some outside) our community...for that we are very thankful.

A Brief History of Public Libraries (Part 1):

In early colonial America, academic pursuits were largely allied with the education of clergy.

Harvard Library was established in 1638 (making it the oldest library system in the United States. It was founded when Puritan minister John Harvard bequeathed half of his estate and his personal collection of 300 - 400 books, mostly theological books, to the newly formed "New College." Later, it was renamed "Harvard College" in the minister's honor.

Today, Harvard University consists of 28 libraries with 700 staff. They house 20 million books, 1 million maps and spatial data sets, 600 million digitized and publicly available items, and 400 million rare items (including letters, photographs, and manuscripts)!

Beyond helping scholars learn, research, and pursue truth, our libraries are dedicated to expanding knowledge and intellectual exploration for everyone.

Friends of the Library Meeting
Tuesday, May 12
4:00 p.m.
Galatia Public Library

Libraries need Friends – it’s just that simple. In fact, across America many public libraries were established through the efforts of community members who understood the value of libraries to their communities and also understood that libraries needed community support to survive.
Did you know that a criterion for securing a Carnegie grant was a demonstrated commitment by members of the community to raise additional funds and support for a new library? This concept hasn’t changed over the course of the past 150 years – what has
changed, however, is that academic and school libraries are also beginning to understand the value of Friends and many academic and school Friends groups are thriving on campus.

This year, after a tough recovery during the COVID period, Friends of the Galatia Public Library is seeing growth in our membership! But we could do so much more for our community's library with more members! And since, our school district no longer has school libraries, our Galatia Public Library is even more important to our community!

We meet once a month. Meetings usually take about an hour or less, depending on what programs/activities our library has coming up that we can offer our help and support with. We'd love to have YOU come to our Friends meetings!
