A backpack is more than something a child carries. It’s a reminder that they matter, that they are loved, and that they deserve dignity.

Backpacks are the most important part of every Comfort Case! They are the foundation of everything we do, providing children entering foster care with a safe place to carry their belongings and essential items instead of a trash bag.

What if meaningful support reached families before a crisis led to separation? 💙

On today’s episode of Comfort Cases: UnPacked, Rob Scheer sits down with Tewabech Genet Stewart, whose 22 years working in Florida’s child welfare system—and experience becoming an adoptive mother—led her to question how we support children and families.

Shaped by her own experiences of family separation during the Liberian civil war, Genet brings a deeply personal perspective to an honest conversation about poverty, safety, belonging, and the loss that can exist alongside the love in adoption.

Together, they explore what it means to protect children facing genuine danger while helping families access the resources and community support they need.

At the heart of it all is a powerful question: Would children choose the child welfare system as it exists today?
