A Continuing Legacy...

In March of 1974, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Cadet Squadron was one of ten Civil Air Patrol Squadrons recognized as a CAP Squadron of Distinction for 1973. Out of 381 eligible squadrons, B-CC was ranked as having a “top ten” cadet program in Civil Air Patrol. Captain William R. Hicks, B-CC’s founding Squadron Commander, described “four basic building blocks” that contributed to the young squadron’s success. They included:

A cadet squadron “run for cadets by cadets.”

Support from “a small group of very dedicated seniors who believe firmly believe in a cadet run squadron.”

Presence of a “strong working cadet staff.”

A strong Cadet Corps

These four building blocks, in conjunction with “Esprit-de-Corps, strong military courtesy and disciple, and many activities,” continued to serve as the foundation throughout decades of squadron excellence.

Fast forwarding to 2019, the Squadron continues to have one of the largest Cadet Corps in Maryland Wing and prides itself in exposing its members to a wide variety of training and activities. B-CC continues to field a capable and experienced Ground Team who has been credited with multiple “finds” over the last few years and who regularly helps to train other members from around the Wing/Region. B-CC’s color guard remains active performing at many community events every year and represented the has the Squadron at the Wing/Region Cadet Competitions.

Cadets also participate in the wing honor guard program, CyberPatriot, Cadet Advisory Council, Encampment cadet cadre, and many National Cadet Special Activities. Squadron activity highlights include Air National Guard Kitchen Detail support, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Wreaths Across America, model rocketry weekends, weather balloon launches, Green Bank Radio Observatory Trips, museum trips, demonstrations with local police/fire rescue, and Triple Play Weekends.

The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron remains steadfast in its commitment to train, develop, and mentor leaders of character through its rich and diverse cadet program!
