The Black and Brown Coalition for Educational Equity and Excellence (“the Coalition”) congratulates Dr. Monifa McKnight on her selection as the next Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent. We are proud to witness and support this historic appointment, as the first woman and only second Black educator to serve as MCPS superintendent - a school system with a majority Black and Brown student body. For the past 3 years the Coalition has worked closely with Dr. McKnight on addressing the school districts resource disparities and systemic barriers too often encountered by Black, Brown, and low-income families. The last several years of the Covid-19 pandemic have further aggravated these barriers and gaps that were created and festered for decades prior. As we begin the process of recovery and restoration, Dr. McKnight’s leadership, integrity, warm disposition, and focus on results for all children will serve Montgomery County’s diverse communities well. We look forward to continuing our partnership with her.

Thousands of students left Maryland’s public schools during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. While many students are slowly coming back as school buildings reopen, enrollment still remains much lower than pre-pandemic levels.

Declining enrollment could have significant consequences, including reduced funding and the elimination of critical programs that help level the playing field for all students.

Enrollment figures for this school year show an uptick in most Baltimore-area school districts, but enrollments are not back to pre-pandemic numbers.

The first Maryland standardized tests given since the beginning of the pandemic show a dramatic drop in student achievement, mirroring a nationwide trend of academic loss.

The declines were worse among students who had been out of in-person school for the longest. We must continue to push for equitable investment in recovery so those who need the most support get all the help they need.

Just 15% of the state’s public school students passed math and 35% passed English, the greatest single-year declines on any state tests given in at least the past two decades in Maryland.

“As school districts across the nation have become increasingly diverse, the diversity of their teachers and administrators has lagged.”

It’s important for Black and Brown students to feel represented and see teachers of color in their classrooms. By recruiting and retaining educators and administrators of color, schools become more equitable.

D.C. schools have improved their hiring, but representation lags for Latino teachers and male teachers of color.

Young children have spent almost two years in a pandemic experiencing significant disruptions in early learning, with children from racially and socioeconomically marginalized groups disproportionately affected.

Due to this pandemic learning loss, children are coming to school with a wide range of academic and social-emotional skills. With a hybrid of in-person and virtual learning across the state, we must meet children where they are and ensure that students have equitable opportunities to learn and succeed.

This blog post explains why there is a pressing need to enhance the quality and relevance of information captured about young children’s classroom experiences, learning, and development. MDRC researchers share examples of how to make assessments more equitable, useful, and actionable.
