Service includes the day-to-day activities of the auxiliary, such as manning the hospital information desk and surgical waiting area; providing refreshments to patients from a juice cart; delivering mail and flowers; and assisting staff in the storeroom, accounts payable, data processing, medical records, cardiac rehab, nursery, and various other departments. It also includes assisting with cleric
al and hostess duties, providing activities for our swing bed patients, and serving as patient advocates and liaisons between hospital staff, patients and families. Fundraising activities include daily operation of the hospital gift shop, bake sales, used book sales, jewelry shows, Durham-Ellis fall nut sale and other events. Funds derived from these activities go to the purchase of needed hospital equipment or for the support of various large projects, as decided by the auxiliary. Funds raised also support a generous scholarship program that promotes high school and college students, including volunteers and employees of the hospital, who wish to further their educations in the health care field. Various committees within the auxiliary provide additional services, such as providing greenery and color for the hospital courtyards, providing layettes for needy newborns, providing stuffed animals to comfort our younger clientele, and creating special tray favors to brighten patient stays.
