🟧 Heartland joined Patricia from Suncoast Outdoors last weekend for a beautiful Hot Hike on the Florida National Scenic Trail -- an "out & back" to Gator Creek Campsite and the Troll Bridge. 🌞 Patty's 'people' at Green Swamp West included Darin, Ken, Kevin, Radi, Sandy, Sue2 and Uma❗️

🌸 There were dozens of native wildflowers on the trail. 💥 AND we located FTA's JOHN WEARY Memorial Plaque at the trailhead kiosk -- T.H.X. for tips from Lenny & to Radi's eagle eyes‼️

💓 GREETINGS to FTA Heartland's newest members .... Lori from Fort Meade❗️ Michelle from Davenport❗️ Susan from Lakeland❗️.... and THANK YOU for making the decision to support your local chapter of the Florida Trail Association! 💚

🚗 Depending on the day (!), an annual FTA membership costs LESS than 10 gallons of unleaded gas. 🚕 And that money does SOOO much more than fill a bit over a half tank with fuel. 🚙 Many thousands of volunteer hours are DONATED, but funds are needed to keep all our maintenance equipment running safely, to purchase paint & bridge building materials, and MORE❗️

💫 Becoming a member of the Florida Trail Association is a way to support the 1️⃣ PRESERVATION of Florida's natural beauty and the 2️⃣ PROTECTION of the Florida National Scenic Trail. 🧡 Your membership fees and contributions help maintain and protect the trail, ensuring that it remains accessible and enjoyable for Future Hiking Generations! 🍃 By supporting the association, you're ALSO contributing to the 3️⃣ RESTORATION of critical habitats, 4️⃣ the creation & marking of new trail segments, and the 5️⃣ provision of environmental EDUCATION to the public. 🤓 Your support 6️⃣ EMPOWERS volunteers and supporters to 7️⃣ SAFEGUARD over 1,400 miles of pristine hiking trails across Florida's diverse landscapes. ‼️

📲 Geo-Referenced Map‼️ C**t Creek State Park gets LOTS of questions in their park office about Trail Maps. ☀️ So here's the answer to MOST of those -- get your very own Georeferenced Map on your cell phone❗️ It's F.R.E.E. and works off satellite rather than cell so you NEVER LOSE your connectivity. 🛰️ The map will show not just the trail map but ALSO your particular location with a "pin." 📌 Never get lost again!

🐊 Due to an unfortunate scheduling error on our part, we missed a terrific 'Crack of Dawn' hike in Heartland Country with Suncoast Outdoors. 🌞 But Patricia led 3 bright-eyed humans -- D, Radl, and Lou (Heartland's fabulous photographer) -- on a great adventure at Gator Creek Reserve! 💚

🐊 Thanks for heading east again to Polk County, Suncoast‼️

🧡 Florida Trail Association H.I.S.T.O.R.Y. -- John Alton Weary (1921-2000)

The JOHN WEARY VOLUNTEER AWARD is presented annually to honor his PIONEER EFFORTS as a Florida Trail Maintainer. 🧡 Members are chosen who have 1️⃣ made Extraordinary Efforts as trail maintainers; who have 2️⃣ helped FTA reach their organizational goal of a Continuous Trail across Florida; and those who have 3️⃣ worked diligently in Building and Maintaining the side and loop trails of the Florida Trail System.

🧡 John held many positions with Florida Trail -- FTA Board Director as well as Board Director, Trail Coordinator, Trail Maintainer and Section leader with Suncoast & Highlanders Chapter.

✝️ 'In Remembrance of John Weary' by BOBBI KEENAN .....

🇨🇦 "John was born in Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. 🇨🇦 He was a Canadian Air Force Veteran of World War II, and an accountant. John moved to Central Florida in 1965. He was an Avid Trail Builder and Maintainer who volunteered +1,200 hours a YEAR building and maintaining trails -- not only for the Florida Trail Association but also working in other states and with the American Hiking Society.

🏔️ He worked as a volunteer trail builder at the Buffalo National River in Arkansas, the Klamath National Forest in northern California and Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. He worked with the Appalachian Mountain Club in the White Mountains and hiked and back-packed extensively in many parts of the USA and Canada.

😎 In 1992, the Lake County Water Authority asked John to build the Island Hammock Trail which later was renamed the Daubenmire Trail at Flat Island Preserve in Leesburg. This trail was built with a “low-impact” design with only hand tools to minimize the impact on plants and animals and with all volunteer labor.

💚 With the help of many other volunteers, John also took on the project of building the GREEN SWAMP TRAIL in the Richloam Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest. This project included upgrading 25 miles of old trail and 9 miles of reroutes and the building of 11 wooden bridges.

🟧 He was an activity leader, chapter officer for the Suncoast Chapter and later was the first Trail Coordinator for the Highlander’s Chapter. Many of his work hikes were organized as overnighters with camping and camaraderie. John was totally dedicated to the Florida Trail. He and his wife Judy were appointed Section Leaders for the Island Hammock Trail in April 1993."
