🪵 BIG TREE DOWN‼️ Heartland volunteers continue working to remove this huge fallen oak across the Red/Yellow Trail at Tenoroc Fish Management Area. ❤️💛 The ground there is too unstable for our good friend Norman to drive Tenoroc's 5-ton bulldozer up to the work site. 💛❤️

💚 So ..... THANK YOU to Barry F, Christopher G (sawyer & Heartland Trail Coordinator), John B, Linda O and Monika H for "Never Giving Up"❗️ Our dedicated volunteers meet at Tenoroc FMA early every Monday morning ..... 3755 Tenoroc Mine Road in Lakeland.

🧡 CONES WITH COPS on the Florida National Scenic Trail‼️ SATURDAY, September 5 at 11am with the Sheriff’s Ice Cream Truck in Davenport's Loma del Sol❗️ The Polk County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) will be operating its newly funded ICE CREAM TRUCK in the Loma del Sol area on 9/5/26 at 11am as part of its summer “Cones with Cops” outreach program. 🍧

🍦F.R.E.E. ICE CREAM for children and families, with deputies on hand for friendly meet‑and‑greet sessions. 📍 Exact street and time will be confirmed via PCSO announcements. ⏰ HOW TO FIND OUT MORE -- ➡️ Follow on TikTok, Facebook, or the PCSO website, or watch local news coverage for the "ice cream social" event on Saturday, September 5th‼️

💙 COMMUNITY POLICING IN ACTION — deputies will be in casual, apron‑wearing mode, not in uniform, to build trust and positive interactions. ⭐️ Crime‑prevention messaging delivered in a relaxed, family‑friendly setting. ⭐️ Right here in Heartland Country❗️

💙 OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS to ask questions, learn about local programs, and connect with law enforcement in a non‑threatening environment. ⭐️

🍧 The truck was funded by Polk Sheriff’s Charities and, in some cases, supported by community partners. ⭐️ It’s part of “OPERATION SOF SERVE”, a campaign to humanize police presence and improve neighborhood relations by making the first interaction with a deputy positive and welcoming. 💙

⏳ In the late 20th century, the 3-loop hiking system at RICHLOAM in Hernando County (just NW of us) was created with the help of Heartland volunteers❗️ Ranging from 9.4 to 13.6 miles, the three main loop hiking trails (East Loop, North Loop, South Loop) were established as part of the Withlacoochee State Forest’s recreational infrastructure. 🧡 These loops connect to the FLORIDA NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL, integrating Richloam into Florida's long-distance hiking network.

🤎 HIKING DURING HUNTING SEASON can be safe & possible IF Awareness, Visibility & Respect for local rules are used to avoid accidents and to maintain everyone's safety.

1️⃣ ... KNOW THE DATES AND RULES .....
Check your state’s hunting regulations before you go. Dates vary by game, weapon, and location — for example, deer rifle season in many states runs in late fall, but turkey, bear, and other seasons can occur year-round.

2️⃣ ... BE HIGHLY VISIBLE .....
Wear blaze orange on your head, chest, and back — a bright orange hat, vest, or jacket, plus an orange backpack cover. 🟠 Use reflective gear (vests with reflective panels) to be seen in low light.
🔸 AVOID earth tones, white, and colors that RESEMBLE game (e.g., red/blue during turkey season). 🟧 If hiking with a dog, outfit them with orange vests, collars, and bandanas. 🔶

3️⃣ ... BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS .....
Hunters are active from early dawn to dusk and often near roads, trailheads, and valleys. Avoid the most popular hunting days, like Opening Weekend, if possible. Stay on marked trails and avoid remote backcountry areas where hunters may be less likely to see you.

4️⃣ ... USE COMMON SENSE‼️ .....
Hike during daylight when hunters can more easily identify you. If you hear shots or see hunters, speak up (“Hikers on the trail!”) to alert them. In some areas, certain animals (like coyotes or wild pigs) may be open season year-round — be aware of these rules.

5️⃣ ... STAY INFORMED LOCALLY .....
Talk to local hiking clubs or park rangers about areas to avoid during hunting season. Check for posted hunting zones or restrictions in parks and forests.

😎 BOTTOME LINE -- By knowing the rules, dressing to be seen, and staying alert, you can enjoy hiking in shared outdoor spaces while minimizing risks. ALWAYS prioritize safety over convenience, and respect the shared responsibility of Protecting the Land. ✅

💚 THANKS to Arbuckle's Jennifer Heller and "All Things Florida" for posting about TIGER CREEK PRESERVE -- right here in Heartland Country at 674 Pfundstein Road in Babson Park, FL 33827‼️

🐯 "Ancient sand islands rise here, remnants of a time when most of Florida sat beneath a shallow sea. 🐯 Tiger Creek Preserve in Babson Park protects 4,980 acres of that landscape along the eastern edge of the Lake Wales Ridge, and it feels nothing like the Florida on postcards. 🐯 At its heart runs Tiger Creek, a blackwater seepage stream stained dark by falling vegetation, joined by Patrick Creek and its rare intact hardwood floodplain." 🐯

🐯 "More than 10 miles of foot trails link 3 entrances, threading through sandhills, oak hammocks, scrubby and pine flatwoods, hardwood swamps, and longleaf pine and wiregrass. 🐯 Color blazed routes like the Creek Bluffs Loop and Highlands Loop pass benches, boardwalks, and an observation platform above Heron Pond. 🐯 The Nature Conservancy has cared for this ground since 1971, safeguarding one of the highest concentrations of rare plants and animals in the country, from gopher tortoises and swallow tailed kites to Carter's mustard. ADMISSION IS FREE❗️ 🐯 Have YOU visited Tiger Creek Preserve❓"
