When you’re an English teacher on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean, professional learning can feel very far away.

But EcoEducate is changing that.

Susan Huss-Lederman, EcoEducate Advisor and expert on project based learning, gives us a glimpse of what it's like working with English teachers on Isabela Island in the Galapagos Archipelago and how small changes can make a big difference in long-term learning.

Professional learning can feel very far away when you're an English teacher on a remote island in the Pacific. On Isabela Island in Galapagos, that has changed.

EcoEducate is fortunate to have Susan Huss-Lederman — Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and EcoEducate’s Director of EcoPBL — leading our English-skills teacher trainings in the Galapagos Islands. Susan is an accomplished specialist in English language learning who thrives on coaching and, just as importantly, on learning from teachers themselves.

English is a powerful tool anywhere, but in Galapagos it’s essential for success in careers in science, conservation, and tourism. Susan recently spent two weeks on Isabela and Santa Cruz Islands helping teachers make English learning easier, more relevant, and a lot more fun.

Moving forward, she’ll be facilitating the exchange of ideas and experiences through monthly online sessions. She’s also forming a team of teacher-leaders who will guide the future professional growth of their peers.

Want to see more of Susan’s work in action? Check out our latest Insight:

In the Galápagos Islands, English is more than just another subject — it’s a lifeline to opportunity. For local youth, strong English skills can open doors to future careers.

EcoEducate is proud to announce that UNIR - La Universidad Internacional de La Rioja en Ecuador, an international leader in online education, will be leading our upcoming Openclass on Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL)!

📅 September 17 | 2:00 pm EST
🌐 Online | Presented in Spanish

This Openclass is part of a broader partnership between UNIR - La Universidad Internacional de La Rioja en Ecuador, EcoEducate, and Fundación Scalesia to strengthen the skills of instructional coaches in the Galapagos Islands, equipping teacher-leaders with the tools they need to support peers and improve student learning. While designed with Galapagos educators in mind, the session is open to other teachers and school leaders interested in SEL.

An educational community is more than a place for transmitting knowledge—it is a space where identities, values, and relationships are built. In the Galápagos, socio-emotional learning (SEL) is central to this vision, strengthening harmony, resilience, and well-being while linking personal growth with care for both people and the environment. SEL isn’t an isolated subject, but a cross-cutting practice that builds belonging, supports mental health, and fosters the kind of environmental leadership the islands need for the future.
