🚒 Eagle Scout Project Helps Virginia First Responders Prepare for Wildfires 🦅
After witnessing the devastation of the 2024 Page Valley wildfires, 17-year-old Devin Wanchoo of Scouts BSA Troop 581 took action. For his Eagle Scout service project, Devin spent a year creating a risk assessment website for first responders — mapping homes, materials, hazards, and even live fire data for remote areas.
The site helps firefighters identify structure types, nearby fuel sources, and more — even in areas with no internet. Devin also discovered 32 structures not listed on county records and raised over $2,000 for the site’s upkeep.
“It took courage to come into a strange town and talk with strange people who you had never met in his entire life and come up with a project that was way beyond our scope of ever seeing,” said Stanley VFD President Terry Pettit. “He was way back in the mountains, far as you could be, and spent a year with it — that took courage to do that.”
