Florida Free Speech Forum Active since 1980, the Florida Free Speech Forum (FFSF) is a lecture series that provides a place in our community for open and constructive dialogue.

The Florida Free Speech Forum (FFSF) is a lecture series that provides a place in our community for open and constructive dialogue. The FFSF is an independent, non-affiliated organization dedicated to the rational examination of public issues. FFSF talks are luncheons held on the second Monday of each month from September through May. Guest speakers are given 30 minutes for their presentation and

another 30 minutes for questions. Views expressed by the speakers are not necessarily those of FFSF. Forum programs are recorded and are available on our YouTube channel.

Join us for lunch and a presentation by Susan Bottcher, former Gainesville city commissioner and long-time political activist in Alachua County.

Please register by Monday, October 6th if you wish to attend.

DESCRIPTION:
This coming November 4th the city of Gainesville will hold a Special Election. The only item on the ballot will be a referendum that asks whether you want to return the governance of GRU back to local control. This presentation will give the history and background of how we got to where we are today with the Governor DeSantis appointed Authority board and why we need to repeat this referendum that passed in 2024 with a super majority of support of Gainesville voters.

SPEAKER BIO:
Susan Bottcher is a former Gainesville city commissioner and has been a political activist in Alachua County for more than 20 years. She has helped on numerous candidate and advocacy campaigns since 2004. Susan currently serves on the state board of directors for Equality Florida, the largest LGBTQ civil right organization in the state.

ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
Due to enhanced security in public schools, The Florida Free Speech Forum now requires event attendees to register in advance. Proof of identity may also be required upon entry to the Institute of Culinary Arts at Eastside High School. In addition, the number of attendees may be limited by the capacity of the venue.

The Florida Free Speech Forum begins our 2025–2026 season with:

“Buckle Up” – A Presentation by Paul Licata, PhD
Retired Professor of Communications, Valencia College (Orlando)

Dr. Licata will take attendees on a compelling ride through history as he explores the personal, economic, and social dynamics that fueled the rise of Adolf Hi**er and Donald Trump—highlighting both their similarities and differences.

Dr. Licata taught undergraduate classes in communications, humanities, and interdisciplinary studies and Holocaust multimedia literature for over 30 years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Holocaust Memorial Research and Education Center from 2003 to 2009.
