Job Description—Program Teacher
Life Transition Skills is a registered nonprofit organization in Gainesville, FL, devoted to empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) by delivering programming designed to help them develop their independence and life skills. In continuous operation for 10 years, interacting with the community at large and assisting each student in reaching their individual potential is our daily mission.
Job Summary: Our LTS Program Teacher develops the daily curriculum designed to assist each student in developing their independence, life and job skills. The Program Teacher is also responsible for daily operations tracking using standard MS Office tools. The Program Teacher will work closely with our LTS Supervisor to maintain a positive, engaging daily schedule for our students. The ideal candidate will have experience—and critically, a passion—for working with individuals with disabilities and a commitment to equity and inclusion for our students.
Duties:
• Supervise students—onsite, on public transportation and in community settings—to ensure their safety and well-being
• Develop—with LTS Supervisor—weekly activities schedule, including community activities and field trips
• Create individual goal plan for each student, in coordination with family members, that promotes independence and life skills
• Lead classroom activities that are engaging for each student
• Provide students with appropriate redirection, using positive behavioral strategies and role modeling
• Work closely with classroom interns and volunteers
• Communicate effectively with students, families, community partners, LTS staff and Board Members
• Maintain confidentiality of students and families
• Document daily progress notes, data and attendance for staff and students
Required:
• High School Diploma
• College coursework or equivalent experience working with I/DD populations
• Proficient with MS Office programs
• Clean Driving Record and reliable transportation to our locations
• Ability to pass ACHA Level 2 Background Check
• CPR/basic first aid skills
Hours and Location:
Life Transition Skills meets Monday—Friday, 9:00am—3:00pm. Home base for LTS is the North Central Florida Community Center, 5201 NW 34th Blvd, Gainesville. On Wednesdays, LTS meets at the Center for Independent Living, 222 SW 36th Terrace, Gainesville. LTS partners with several community organizations for volunteer work and, when appropriate, uses public transportation.
Compensation:
Salary range: $18.00 to $21.00 per hour, based on experience, for a 30-hour work week.
