UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine

UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine Transforming the healthcare experience for patients, care partners, and UF Health staff and promoting healthier communities through the arts since 1990.
๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿฉฐ๐Ÿ“

The backbone of AIM's mission is a group of arts in medicine practitioners (visual artists, dancers, writers, musicians, and contemplative artists) who serve as mentors for a large number of trained volunteers. In recent years, the quality and commitment of our artists has accelerated program growth and secured full integration of the program into the healthcare setting. Additionally, AIM is commi

tted to using the arts to transform the medical environment from a sterile, depersonalized setting to one of color and inspiration by displaying artwork on both permanent and rotating bases. Our Story

UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine (AIM) was founded in 1990 at Shands Hospital (now UF Health) at the University of Florida. AIM is a multidisciplinary organization with programs in the visual, literary, and performing arts. AIM serves inpatients of all ages, their loved ones, visitors, healthcare providers, and the Gainesville and statewide communities. The program is focused on transforming health through the arts and providing leadership for hospital and community arts programs throughout the nation. Our program facilitates arts activities, workshops and performances in three hospitals and numerous out-patient clinics, and is known internationally as one of the leaders in the field of arts in health. Evidence suggests that viewing physical, original artworks can have a profound and immediate effect on the body, supporting what humans have known to be true for centuries:

The arts are good for us. ๐ŸŒŸ

Discover the findings:

โ€˜Genuinely surprisingโ€™ study shows that original art benefits three different body systems all at once

Staff who work in Emergency Departments are at an elevated risk for burnout and emotional exhaustion. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Hand-drumming for 10-15 minutes before or after a shift wonโ€™t solve this important issue for our colleagues who work in the UF Health Adult ED, but it might offer a much-needed break from routine (or even encourage a new-found hobby) through one of humankindโ€™s oldest stress relievers, hitting a drum! ๐ŸŽถ

Last week, Arts in Medicine hosted a hand-drumming workshop for the physicians, nurses, and non-clinical staff in the Adult Emergency Department. The goal was simple: come have fun, learn a bit about how to make certain sounds on the drums, and relieve some stress in the process.

Encouraged to stop by on their way out of work or on their way in, AIM musician Jahirah Williams led staff through a series of rhythm tutorials and song-writing techniques that inspired smiles and lots of laughter! ๐Ÿ˜„

Bringing joy wherever they go, the Seniors on the Move dancers brought down the house at last week's Art After Dark event at the Harn Museum of Art! ๐ŸŒŸ

Did You Know?
The Seniors on the Move group is comprised of Gainesville locals ages 50+ who meet regularly as a vibrant, supportive community. A Greater Duval Neighborhood Association program, their dedication to enriching their lives and supporting their health and wellbeing guided them to Arts in Medicine's dancer in residence, Shera Curtis, who now leads free, weekly creative dance classes for the group.

These Seniors not only participate in the warmups, choreography, and performances--they engage their own creative minds by offering dance moves and designing performance costumes. They actively collaborate to make each dance and each class uniquely their own! They are a shining example of collaboration in the community that supports a population of elders that otherwise may not have access to regular creative engagements. ๐Ÿ’™
