Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery

Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery PCCC is a non-profit community cemetery that conserves land and reunites people with the Earth.

Prairie Creek conservation Cemetery is licensed by the state of Florida and certified at the highest level by the Green Burial Council. PCCC collaborates with Alachua Conservation Trust (ACT), a long-standing conservation organization in Gainesville, to manage, protect, and restore the land for all living things. By preventing the use of embalming fluids and vaults, those laid to rest here can return to and become one with the earth.

Gainesville's Satchel's Pizza has a bimonthly fundraiser for local non-profits, called Round Up For Charity (RUFC). Every time a customer makes a purchase at Satchel's or Lightnin' Salvage, they are asked if they want to round up for their RUFC partner for that two-month period. We are honored and deeply grateful to be selected as the featured charity for the months of September and October! Please be sure to give Satchel's a visit, and think of us when you grab a slice. Last week, we had a very special opportunity to partner with Ordway-Swisher Biological Station (OSBS). With our stellar group of volunteers and staff, we helped to plant 3,500 grass plugs, consisting of wiregrass and lopsided Indiangrass, in an open pasture area that OSBS is actively restoring on their property. Later in the fall we will return to see our grass's progress and collect seed for our North Meadow restoration. After we finished a beautiful morning of planting, we took a tour of the 9,600+ acre property and learned more about OSBS's research, conservation, and restoration processes. Thank you, JT, for facilitating such a great experience! We look forward to coming back in the fall!

We are excited to announce our August Walk in the Woods combined with elements of Shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of Forest Bathing. Forest Bathing is the practice of walking in a meditative mode among trees with many physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. Participants will be guided in a stroll through the forest and come together to discuss what they experienced.

Time tends to pass us by quickly, but August serves as a motivational reminder to create your will. It’s a powerful document that not only will give you peace of mind, but also lets you distribute your property and protect your loved ones after you pass away. It ensures your assets go to the people and places that you intend, and it also gives your family guidance that they can fulfill your wishes during what is likely a very difficult time for them. It is recommended to review your will every three to five years, or if you have a big life change.

Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery exists because of the generous contributions made since 2010 by volunteers, one-time donors and sustaining sponsors. In addition to choosing a natural burial at PCCC, making a planned gift to PCCC is a meaningful way to express your support of this significant work, and further our mission. Leaving a set amount or percentage of your estate to a non-profit has a range of financial rewards. There is a wide range of tax and income incentives the federal law provides to encourage your generous support of non-profits.

We recently went LIVE on NPR's WUSF Public Media show, "Florida Matters Live and Local" to share about the growing interest in conservation burial.

As more and more people consider the impacts of their final wishes, they are exploring burial options that skip embalming chemicals, concrete vaults, and elaborate caskets. Heather Grove, PCCC Director, joined two other conservation cemeteries to talk about the environmental, emotional and financial appeal of green burials that are drawing interest from an increasing number of Floridians.

Thanks to the funds Alachua Conservation Trust raised via Satchel's Pizza Round Up for Charity fundraiser, combined with PCCC's 50% contribution, ACT is able to replace and build two new boardwalks at Prairie Creek Preserve that accommodate ACT's EcoRover All-Terrain Wheelchairs! The first boardwalk has been rebuilt, which leads folks in and out of the cemetery's cypress swamp on our dear Kathy Cantwell Trail, and the other will be upgraded closer to the Rochelle trailhead soon. Retrofitting our trails expands access to community members who might not otherwise get the opportunity to enjoy them.

ACT’s EcoRover program is aimed to provide recreational access to our trail systems and events to the community and increase access to wild Florida for all. The chair user can control the EcoRover, or a buddy can control it with an additional joystick. It can easily traverse through sand, gravel, dirt, mud, mulch, and grass.

Behind the scenes, Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery (PCCC) is supported by a Board of Directors, consisting of 15 wonderful volunteers. Each board member brings a unique skill set and perspective to assist the organization with fulfilling its mission, while working on expansion, land stewardship, and community engagement. Participating on our board is an opportunity to contribute to conservation and PCCC’s promise to offer affordable natural burials.
