The Sister Cities Program of Gainesville is a non-profit organization founded in Gainesville, Fla., that strives to be a community leader by encouraging municipal officers and members of the community to engage in long-term relationships with other Sister City programs throughout the world. Gainesville is the largest city and county seat of Alachua County; it serves as the educational, cultural an

d commercial center for the North Central Florida Region. Gainesville is also home to the University of Florida, one of Florida’s largest and oldest universities and is the one of the state’s centers of medicine, education, athletics and cultural events. The University of Florida and Shands Hospital at UF are the leading employers in Gainesville and provide jobs for many surrounding counties. Gainesville’s industry varies from manufacturing to agricultural, health care, academic research, corporate infrastructure and multiple small businesses. In the early 1980s, during the height of the Cold War the Gainesville City Commission decided to by-pass national governments by reaching out to Novorossiisk, Russia and invited the people of Novorossiisk, to start relationships with Gainesville. Junior, recognized Steven and Natalia Kalishman to represent Gainesville to establish a Sister City relationship with the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. This started the first U.S. and Soviet Sister City relationship at the community level. The resolution was passed June 24, 1982, between the Gainesville City Commission and City of Novorossiisk, Krasnodar Region. The Sister City Program of Gainesville initiated the first real U.S./Soviet sister city program, between Gainesville and Novorossiisk, Russia. By 1990, we helped connect more than 200 U.S. and Soviet cities in sister city relationships. Now, the Sister City Program of Gainesville, Inc., enjoys multi-cultural partnerships with Novorossiisk, Russia; Duhok, Iraq; and we also have an exclusive three-way partnership with Kfar Sava, Israel, Qalqilya, Palestine and Gainesville, Florida.
