The Zabara Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to UF Health sports medicine physician Sara Gould, M.D., to study the intersection of concussion, depression and treatment using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in female equestrian athletes, a group Gould says is historically overlooked in this field.

“I think the reason we do all of this is the potential to help,” she said. “Being able to do something to prevent some of the burden of mental health and effect change in that area is huge. We can be saving lives with this treatment.”

Gould’s research focuses on athletes experiencing both mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) and co-occurring mental health challenges — an area of growing clinical need.

Meet University of Florida medical student Jennifer Wen, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) alumna and a recipient of the merit-based Dr. R. Dean and Elizabeth F. Hautamaki Endowed Medical Scholarship. Growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, Wen's journey to medicine was inspired by a natural curiosity for the world around her.

“For me, medicine connects science with people,” she said. “It is understanding how the world works, but it is a field that relies on human connection, talking with people and understanding their specific stories.”

Now an officer with UF's free, student-run Equal Access Clinic Network, she uses her inquisitive nature to help care for uninsured and underinsured patients in the community.

“I want to keep doing this work," Wen said. "Whether that is through volunteering, public health or clinical care, I want to help create a world with fewer barriers.”

All month long, Costco employees and members are raising funds to help local kids, like Owen!

Minutes after birth, Owen was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect which required immediate and life-saving care from the UF Health congenital heart team. Today, he's thriving on and off the basketball court, enjoys playing with his siblings and even considering becoming a Costco employee one day after his amazing visit.
