In 2019, Francine Fischer developed atrial fibrillation and was diagnosed with a genetic heart condition. Her symptoms of dizziness, nausea and difficulty laying flat prompted a chain of referrals that led to UF Health cardiologist Dr. Juan Vilaro.

In gratitude for the compassionate care from Dr. Vilaro, Francine and her husband, Randy, have given back to support the Heart Failure/Heart Transplant Fellowship. They refer to him as "The Admiral," a tribute to his commanding presence and compassion he showed both family and staff during a period marked by five hospital stays.

"Having worked my tail off for 36 years, I want to see the best possible use of the resources we have accumulated," Randy said.

Randy and Francine Fischers' story began with a high school romance that led to a marriage and medical journey that forever tied them to UF Health.

Meet Nellie Crlenjak and Shelbi Winslow, two University of Florida College of Medicine students in the M.D. Class of 2029 who received the Michael G. Lehtola, M.D., and Bruce A. Bearden Medical Scholarship.

"I started undergrad at UF as an engineering major because I have always loved science and math and breaking down complex systems to their fundamental components to understand them," Crlenjak said. "Over the years, I’ve come to think of doctors as sort of engineers of the most intricate system in nature — the human body. I am so fascinated every single day I get to learn more about what it can do."

For Winslow, the path to medicine was shaped by her mother's love and support.

"Despite having far fewer opportunities than those she worked to provide for me, she pushed herself to earn two master’s degrees and build a flourishing career through perseverance and resilience," Winslow said. "Because of her, I have these values instilled in me ... She has shaped how I approach everything in life, including the type of physician and person I am working to become."
