h our sales. Our goal is to give back to Alachua County community in any way that we can. Our library programs include scholarships and literacy projects. We offer mini-grants to eligible organizations in Alachua County. Not to mention our huge twice-annual book sale that is made possible by donations from members of the community! Volunteer highlight. Meet Chris Curry (AKA Papa C). Chris is the table coordinator for HOBBIES/ HOW TO (with tools). He has been volunteering with us for about 10 years. If you need to find books on building or crafts/hobbies involving tools, he is the "go-to" guy. You may also find him fixing shelves around the book house. Chris is a self-taught auto mechanic, house builder & blacksmith. He taught reading for 15 years, often using purchases from our sales!

After the books come in, our volunteers sort them by genre and place them at the appropriate location on the sorting table. Then the table coordinators take the books to their area.

Happy Birthday to Norman Juster, born on this day in 1929.

His book, The Phantom Tollbooth, is considered a classic. First published in 1961, the story follows a bored young boy named Milo who unexpectedly receives a magic tollbooth that transports him to the once prosperous, but now troubled, Kingdom of Wisdom. Along with a dog named Tock and the Humbug, Milo goes on a quest to the Castle in the Air seeking the kingdom's two exiled princesses, named Rhyme and Reason. As Milo learns valuable lessons, he finds a love of learning in a story full of puns and wordplay.
Norman Juster was also an architect and served in the U.S. Navy. He shared a house in Brooklyn with Jules Feiffer who did the illustrations for the book.
