It's National Heat Awareness Day๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿฅต

Thinking about hitting the trail this summer? Hiking in Florida can be beautiful, but the heat, humidity, thunderstorms, flooding, and insects make summer conditions especially challenging.

Here are a few essential safety tips before you head out:

๐Ÿ’ง Carry MORE water than you think you need
Florida heat and humidity can cause dehydration and heat exhaustion quickly. Start early, take breaks in the shade, and know the signs of heat illness: dizziness, nausea, chills, headache, and confusion.

๐ŸŒ… Timing matters
Many experienced Florida hikers avoid midday summer hiking altogether. Starting at sunrise and ending before peak afternoon heat can make your hike much safer.

โ›ˆ๏ธ Watch the weather
Summer thunderstorms can develop fast. If thunder is within 30 seconds of lightning, seek shelter immediately and avoid open areas and tall trees.

๐ŸฆŸ Protect yourself from insects
Mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers thrive in Florida summers. Lightweight long sleeves, bug spray, and permethrin-treated clothing can make a huge difference.

๐Ÿงญ Download maps & tell someone your plan
Cell service can be unreliable. Carry offline maps, know your route, and always share your itinerary with a trusted person before your hike.

๐ŸŠ Respect wildlife & changing trail conditions
Flooding, swamp crossings, snakes, and alligators are all part of the Florida hiking experience. Stay alert, avoid approaching wildlife, and never enter floodwaters you canโ€™t safely assess.

Stay safe (and cool!) out there ๐Ÿ˜Ž

American alligators are an iconic part of Florida's wild places and critical to the ecosystem of the places we love.

๐ŸŠ Alligators are an important keystone species.
๐ŸŠ It is illegal to provoke or feed them. (Just don't)
๐ŸŠ Estimated 1.25 million live in Florida.
๐ŸŠ Alligators live in every Florida county.
๐ŸŠ Florida is the only place where alligators & crocodiles live together in the wild.
