If you’re curious about joining but not sure where you’ll fit in, there are several teams we’re looking to fill in order to make the biggest impact:

Tree Health and Tree Placement (plant science knowledge needed to ensure projects are successful in the short- and long-run)

Logistics (make sure projects have the materials/resources needed)

Finance (Treasurer position)

Outreach and Fundraising (social media, science communication, fundraising for projects)

Recruitment, Training, and Team Building (recruiting and educating new members)

Organization (ensure all components run smoothly and all teams have the tools they need to succeed)

The main mission of this organization is to slow climate change by utilizing carbon sequestration through sustainable forestry.

Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through biological, chemical, or physical processes. Trees trap carbon biologically through photosynthesis by taking in carbon dioxide and water and converting it to oxygen and glucose. This glucose, or sugar, traps the carbon in biomass.

While all trees sequester carbon, some do it more efficiently than others. One tree of importance for slowing climate change is the Empress tree.

Hi everyone!
We are a new UF organization currently recruiting students who are passionate about taking immediate action against climate change. Our main goal is to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by carrying out tree-planting projects that will sequester carbon efficiently and economically.

A lot of people have asked why we would want to build more tall wooden buildings if they could burn down. The answer is that lumber buildings are actually safer in a fire. At high temperatures concrete and steel suddenly and catastrophically lose their strength. That's what happened on 9/11. In contrast, wood burns slowly from the edges and the inner part stays strong.

When a tree absorbs CO2 it stores the carbon in wood. It's eating the carbon dioxide. Some research projects remove CO2 from the air and store it as a compressed gas. We think it makes more sense to store the CO2 in wood.

Here's why: Americans each emit 20 tons of CO2 a year. A scuba tank can hole 4.5kg (9.9 pounds) of CO2. That means you would need 4,400 scuba tanks to hold one American's yearly emissions. Lumber is a lot easier to handle than 4,400 scuba tanks.

Go Big or Go Home:

Using trees to reduce CO2 emissions is a big project... or a truly enormous project. The average American emits twenty tons of CO2 each year, and our trees can remove a hundred tons of CO2 per year. Average trees only remove ten tons and the other trees we have only remove thirty to fifty.

That means canceling out a the emissions of a school like UF would require ten thousand acres or 15.3 square miles, a square almost four miles on each side. Fortunately the US has tens of millions of acres that need to be reforested!
