Gainesville Free Grocery Store

We're making nutritious food free and abundant for all! Operating out of the Civic Media Center.

Free Grocery Store (FGS) is a food-based mutual aid project hosted by the Civic Media Center. FGS seeks to challenge the commodification of food that has led to unequal food access and address the food waste inherent in our current food systems. To do so, we distribute free, sustainable food to members of the community. We’re currently packing and delivering free food to over 300 individuals acros

s about 100 households every two weeks. We also maintain a garden space at the McRorie Community Garden, which provides fresh veggies for us to share with community members. As we grow and increase the number of community members we are able to serve, we will need help with packing, driving, and gardening, along with other tasks involved in organizing our efforts. Fall is just around the corner, and while we hope the weather cools down, Free Grocery Store is heating up!

We’re all enjoying our new pantries at Cone Park Library Branch, so we’ll be continuing our distros there once a month! And we’ll be BACK at The Civic Media Center starting September 8th.

Thank you to all our patrons who have been so patient as we navigate ever-changing logistics. These pantries have a lot of moving parts, and we aim for consistency, but when circumstances change our plans, your kindness and understanding mean the world to us.

Want to get involved with Free Grocery Store? Our volunteer meetings are open to everyone! Whether you’ve been organizing for years or are just dipping your toe in, you’re welcome at our table :)

Free Grocery Store is seeking volunteers to interpret at our walk-up food pantries! These events happen bimonthly, on the 2nd Tuesday and last Thursday of every month. You DO NOT need to be available for every pantry.

We currently have need for people with proficiency in English AND one or more of the following languages:
- Spanish
- Mandarin Chinese
- American Sign Language
- Haitian Creole

FGS could use food donations to help supplement the food we already receive from Bread of the Mighty. If y'all have any extra self-stable food items, consider bringing them to Working Food or one of Free Grocery Store's upcoming pantries!

Free Grocery Story has an additional new location!

Starting in June, we'll only be doing the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Civic Media Center, and the second walkup pantry will now be the LAST Thursday of the month at Cone Park Branch Library.

We need your help staffing our delivery pantry this week! Sorting, packing and delivery driving shifts are available for sign-up for May 8.
Sorting shifts at 2-3 pm, packing is 3-4:30, and driving shifts are between 4:15-5:30 pm. For driving, you need to have a reliable vehicle with room to hold 4-7 boxes/bags of food. No previous experience is required for any of our roles! Just arrive at the and we’ll teach you anything you need to know! Sign up link is in our bio! Please DM us if you have any questions.
