Great information regarding scams from Gainesville Police Department

Scammers continue to use fake pop-up advertisements to trick victims into giving away money and personal information.

Remember: Legitimate companies will not lock your screen, demand immediate payment through Bitcoin, gift cards, or cash, or ask for your passwords.

If you receive a suspicious pop-up ad:
โ˜… Do not click on it.
โ˜… Close the window safely.
โ˜… Run a security scan on your device to ensure it has not been infected with malware.

Common signs of a malicious pop-up include:
โ˜… Pressure to act immediately
โ˜… Fake "tech support" phone numbers
โ˜… Poor grammar and spelling
โ˜… Offers that seem too good to be true
โ˜… Pop-ups that are difficult or impossible to close

Many of these scams use the logos and branding of well-known companies to appear legitimate. However, the website address (URL) is often slightly misspelled or completely unrelated to the company it claims to represent.

Take a moment to slow down, verify before you click, and remember: if something feels off, it probably is. Many of these scams are originating overseas making them very had track/prosecute.

Be scam aware. Don't become a victim.

๐Ÿ“ข We heard your concerns about parking along NW 140th Street.

After receiving complaints about parking and roadway safety, the City of Alachua and the Alachua Police Department worked with the Florida Department of Transportation to begin a no parking roadway improvement along NW 140th Street.

Starting this week, new No Parking restrictions will be in place on NW 140th Street from NW US Highway 441 to NW 142nd Avenue.

The areas where parking was previously allowed will now be marked with white striping, indicating that parking is no longer permitted.

These restrictions are being implemented to help improve visibility, traffic movement, and overall safety for drivers, pedestrians, residents, and emergency vehicles traveling through the area.

While crews are working in the area, drivers are reminded to slow down, stay alert, and obey all traffic laws. Speeding fines are doubled in construction zones when workers are present.

Once these restrictions are in place, violations will be enforced. Vehicles parked in marked no parking areas may be subject to warnings, citations, or towing.

We appreciate everyoneโ€™s cooperation as these roadway improvements are completed.
