I must say that the universe definitely works in mysterious ways...just a few short months ago I had decided that I needed to scale back a bit and send packages behind the scenes rather than using the public platform of Facebook, for the time being. However, I do continue to welcome requests for care packages.
The universe was giving me notice and prepping me for what lay ahead. One of our pups, Jagger (our chocolate lab rescued from Louisiana) was diagnosed with bone cancer in May 🥹😭 Thankfully we have a wonderfully supportive network of friends and family and medical professionals armed with the skills and expertise to guide us through this cancer journey.
We are always grateful for Dr Kayleen Gloor of Clarendon Animal Care in Arlington, Virginia, who is always ready and willing to give us that second expert opinion that never fails to be correct.
Thank you to Dr Pamela White of TOS Vet in Leesburg, Virginia, for whiteboarding every treatment option available to help Jagger. While she concentrates her practice in radiation oncology, she did not hesitate to recommend others who could help if we chose other options.
Thank you to Dr Jim Taylor of VSC Vets in Leesburg, Virginia, for re-arranging his intense surgical schedule to fit Jagger in for next day leg amputation after a thorough consultation with him. Jagger's surgery did not begin until after 5 pm which shows Dr Taylor's dedication to his patients. We are incredibly grateful!
Thank you to Dr Brendan Boostrom of MedVet in Manassas, Virginia, for understanding our urgency to begin chemotherapy. Jagger is there right now as I write this undergoing his first of five sessions. He also was admitted to a Yale University clinical trial that administers a vaccine that develops anti-tumor immune responses.
All of the above veterinarians and their staff are incredibly gifted and kind professionals. This most difficult time in Jagger's life has been made manageable because of them. We always felt that we were given all the information we needed to make the best decision for Jagger.
Jagger has been a star patient through it all. He has always enjoyed car rides and still after all of these many vet visits, hops into the car with his tail wagging. His right front leg and shoulder blade were removed and his post-op progress has been nothing short of amazing. He mastered stairs in short order and his appetite never waned...well, he is a lab ;) His prognosis has gone from 1-4 months to 12-14 months. We remain cautiously optimistic.
I tell you all of this not to garner sympathy but to let you know that should any of you need the support during times like this, please reach out. Especially if you are in the Virginia/Maryland/DC area! I can not recommend the doctors who have helped Jagger more. They are absolutely incredible!
Parker's Pals will gladly send care packages to pups undergoing cancer treatment and, of course, will continue to send care packages to foster pups in foster homes.
Much love to all of you ❤
