Meet our Georgia Hope After Grief Scholarship recipient- in memory of William Matthew Lewis.

Isabella lost her father unexpectedly a few years ago. Having been the one to find him several days after his passing, she carried additional emotions that added an extra layer to her grief. She has worked through those emotions as she makes plans to attend Valdosta State and graduate with a degree in Health Science. After that, her goal is to go to North Georgia University and obtain her Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

Honored to share our South Carolina Scholarship recipient- in memory of Sam Randazzo.

Rashawn received the news that his father had died early one morning. It just so happened to be the morning after he had played his best J.V. basketball game, and was still on a high from the win. He remembers that his father wanted him to be academically sound, so that he could create more opportunities for himself. Because of this, he maintained his education while pursuing basketball, track & field, and cross country. He wants to create his own memorial scholarship in memory of his dad that focuses on fire safety and build a community center to keep youth engaged through sports recreation. He will be attending Francis Marion University and wants to focus his career on Sports/Business Management.

Our 2024 scholarship applications are now open. Reminder that this scholarship is for seniors in high school in GA and SC who have had a parent or sibling die. 💗 This year's scholarships are in memory of Sam Randazzo and William Matthew Lewis.

It's , so we are kicking it off with making a special announcement about our scholarships for 2024. From now on, each scholarship given will be in memory of someone who played a special role in making this scholarship happening. Many have contributed to these scholarships because of someone they lost and the grief they experienced, so we are going to honor that memory in each scholarship we give. Our 2024 scholarships will be given in memory of Sam Randazzo and William Matthew Lewis. Thanks to Kirk Randazzo and Will Lewis for your continued support of Hope After Grief and the work you both personally do to help grieving children. We will always honor your loved one's memories. 💗

I'm taking a "Dying Well" course, and it really has me thinking about the concept of life and death in a philosophical way. So, I have a question for you all: what has death taught you about life? For me, it taught me life was short. As cliche as it sounds, I know it can change instantly so I do try to treasure little moments that mean a lot to me.

Here at Hope After Grief, we do more than just give scholarships to grieving students. We are also involved in advocacy efforts to change the grief landscape nationwide. One of these efforts is to stop the grief-to-prison pipeline. Our Executive Director, Sydney Ford, coined the term this year in her TedX Talk (available on YouTube) to discuss what can happen when we don't help youth through their grieving process, and when we don't make room to understand that certain behaviors are due to trauma and grief.

Sydney has traveled the Southeast on behalf of HAG Inc. sharing this subject matter, as well as discussing trauma-informed lawyering. You can DM us to book her for speaking gigs, or to get more information on what you can do to help!

I can directly trace my anxiety to my grief. I know what portion of my dad's death caused it, and why it led to so much fear of the unknown. If you have anxiety after losing someone, you're not alone, and this is perfectly normal!

In my question series, one question I've always had is would my dad come back if he could. Would he want to be here to see me, or is he happier where he is? I know this all depends on your religious beliefs, but part of me hopes that he'd want to be here with me, no matter how at peace he is.

Someone asked me the other day if my dad would be proud of what I was doing, and it was so interesting to think about. Because my dad died when I was 10, the answer was I truly don't know. I often feel like I didn't really get to know him, especially not in the way I would as an adult. At the end of the day the work I'm doing in his name is for the kids like me who are fighting through grief, and as someone who helped everyone, I think he'd be proud of that.
