MAYOR EXCITED ABOUT BUFFETT EXHIBIT
Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis says his excitement continues to build as the opening of “Son of a Son of a Sailor: The Jimmy Buffett Experience” draws closer.
“With every passing day, I get more and more excited,” Cheriogotis wrote Friday in his Good Evening Mobile newsletter.
The permanent exhibit honoring Jimmy Buffett opens Sept. 12 at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf. Cheriogotis said Executive Director Karen Poth and the museum staff have been hard at work preparing for the opening.
That work has included recent interviews with country star Kenny Chesney about his longtime friendship with Buffett and Sunshine Smith about helping Buffett build the Margaritaville brand from the beginning.
The 6,000-square-foot exhibit will feature more than 250 artifacts, never-before-seen footage and photographs, recorded interviews, phone audio and stories from Buffett’s friends and family. It will also include an immersive concert experience with rare backstage artifacts.
“Whether you’re a Parrothead, a music lover, or just a curious Mobilian, you won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind look,” Cheriogotis wrote.
Cheriogotis also reminded readers about “Margaritas & Memories,” featuring longtime Coral Re**er Mac McAnally and songwriter Scotty Emerick. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Saenger Theatre, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the new exhibit.
